The new SBS drama Phantom Lawyer is off to a hot start, and viewers are already loving the unique mix of courtroom battles and supernatural comedy. The show, which stars Yoo Yeon Seok as a lawyer who can see ghosts and Esom as a rival attorney, aired its second episode on March 14, and it delivered a satisfying victory along with some clever surprises. If you missed it or just want the details on when the next episode drops, here is everything you need to know about Episode 2 and the release schedule for Episode 3.
Phantom Lawyer Episode 2 Recap: How Shin I-rang Won His First Case
Episode 2 picked up right where the premiere left off. Shin I-rang (Yoo Yeon Seok) found himself in a tough spot after his first day in court went completely wrong. During the trial for the medical malpractice case of Lee Kang-poong (Heo Sung-tae), the angry ghost possessed I-rang’s body, causing him to lose control and act like a thug in front of everyone. After that disaster, I-rang wanted nothing to do with the ghost and tried to burn the talisman that connected them. But Kang-poong, desperate to get justice for his family, stopped him and begged the lawyer to help his sick daughter.
I-rang’s kind heart took over, and he agreed to take the case seriously. The key to winning was finding the hospital’s EMR (Electronic Medical Record) hard drive, which would prove that Kang-poong did not die from a heart attack during surgery. The evidence was hidden by a gangster working for the hospital. With Kang-poong’s ghost guiding him, I-rang and his clumsy brother-in-law Yoon Bong-soo (Jeon Seok-ho) went undercover to steal it back.
The plan did not go smoothly. They were trapped inside a warehouse full of gangsters. At the same time, Han Na-hyun (Esom), the cold and elite lawyer from Taebaek Law Firm, showed up at the same warehouse pretending to be a prosecutor to get the hard drive for herself. Just when things looked hopeless for I-rang, Kang-poong possessed his body again. This time, the transformation was shocking. The gentle, scared lawyer turned into a fearless gangster, complete with rough satoori dialect and bare-knuckle fighting skills. He took down the thugs and secured the evidence.
In the end, I-rang won the case. The guilty doctor was arrested, and Lee Kang-poong’s family finally got justice. Before moving on to the afterlife, Kang-poong visited his daughter one last time through I-rang’s body to tell her that her father’s death was not her fault. It was a touching moment that balanced the comedy and action from earlier in the episode.
Fun Easter Eggs: A Nod to Yoo Yeon Seok’s Dr. Romantic and Esom’s Taxi Driver
One of the most fun parts of Episode 2 that got fans talking was the hidden references to the actors’ past hit dramas. During the episode, after I-rang won the case, Lee Kang-poong was amazed by the lawyer’s medical knowledge. He asked, “Did you graduate med school, too? You’re so smart!” This line was a direct and hilarious shoutout to Yoo Yeon Seok’s famous role as a doctor in the popular series Dr. Romantic and Hospital Playlist.
Esom also got her own moment. When Han Na-hyun went undercover at the warehouse, she used a fake prosecutor ID. The name on the ID was “Prosecutor Kang Ha-na,” which is the exact character Esom played in Season 1 of the hit SBS drama Taxi Driver. She even wore a hairstyle similar to that character. These small details added an extra layer of fun for longtime K-drama fans. The production team explained that these were homages placed to add a bit of fun even during the tense chase for evidence.
Strong Ratings for Episode 2
The exciting second episode paid off for the network. According to Nielsen Korea, Phantom Lawyer Episode 2 scored an average nationwide rating of 8.7%. This is a big jump from the premiere’s 6.3% and proves that viewers are liking the show’s unique concept. In the Seoul metropolitan area, the ratings went even higher, hitting 9.2% with a peak moment of 11.3%. It ranked first in its time slot, beating out competing dramas.
