The DC Universe is expanding, and Aaron Pierre is at the center of it all. The British actor recently opened up about how his work on the HBO series Lanterns prepared him for his next big adventure: the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
Pierre plays John Stewart, a new recruit in the Green Lantern Corps. The series, which premiered on August 16, 2026, follows Stewart as he trains under veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. The show jumps between two timelines—2016 and 2026—giving viewers a deep look at Stewart’s journey from rookie to a more seasoned hero.
Now, Pierre is set to bring John Stewart to the big screen in Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, he explained why the HBO series was so important for his performance in the film.
Six Months of Hard Work Shaped His Performance
Pierre described the filming schedule for Lanterns as demanding. He worked six days a week for six months, with minimum 12-hour days. That intense period gave him the time to fully understand his character before stepping onto the movie set.
“I can’t say much, but what I can say is what a gift it was to have had six months consecutively of six day weeks and a minimum of 12 hour days to live with John and excavate his character before going into Man of Tomorrow.”
The actor believes that without that experience, his work on the Superman sequel would have been very different.
He Knew John Stewart Before Filming Started
Pierre admitted that if he had gone straight into Man of Tomorrow without first doing Lanterns, he would have been figuring out his character on the spot.
“I think my experience on Man of Tomorrow with the wonderful team over there would have been a lot different had I not done the HBO series first.”
He added that he “would have gone in there and been discovering in real time, in a very quick pace, who John was”. Instead, he already had a strong grasp of the character. That preparation gave him confidence.
“I went in there with a calmness and a steady hand that I’m very grateful for.”
The Series Serves as an Origin Story
Lanterns is more than just a TV show—it is an origin story for Pierre’s John Stewart. The series explores his complicated relationship with Hal Jordan, who is forced to train him even though he does not want to.
The first episode sets up a dark, earth-based mystery. The two Lanterns investigate a murder in the American heartland. By the end of the episode, the story jumps to 2026, where Stewart arrives in Rushville, Nebraska, and finds Hal Jordan’s dead body. That shocking moment raises big questions about what comes next.
The series will run for eight episodes, with new episodes releasing weekly. The finale is set for October 4, 2026.
Man of Tomorrow Brings John Stewart to Theaters
Man of Tomorrow is the fourth movie in the new DC Universe. It brings back David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The film will also feature Milly Alcock as Supergirl and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.
The story will see Superman and Lex Luthor team up to face a larger threat—Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. John Stewart will join this cast of heroes, making his theatrical debut as a Green Lantern.
Pierre acknowledged that there is still more to learn about John Stewart. He said there are “endless amounts of excavation to do now and always beyond this point”. But thanks to his time on Lanterns, he is ready for whatever comes next.
