Fans of mystery stories and rare books have something big to look forward to. A popular Japanese novel series about a shy bookstore owner who solves mysteries is finally getting its anime version. Kadokawa officially shared the news on April 21, 2026, that Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia will become a TV anime in 2027.
This announcement marks the end of a long wait. The project was first talked about as an anime film back in 2017. But that never happened. Now, almost ten years later, the series is getting a full television adaptation from a top animation studio.
The timing is special. The novel series is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The first book came out in March 2011. Seeing the anime arrive around this milestone makes the news even better for long time readers.
What is the Story About?
The series puts the spotlight on Shioriko Shinokawa. She runs a small secondhand bookstore called Biblia. It sits quietly in a corner of Kamakura, a historic city in Japan. Shioriko fits the picture of a calm bookstore owner. But there is a catch.
She has extreme shyness. She can barely speak to people she meets for the first time. This makes customer service very hard for her. However, her weakness with people becomes her strength with books. Her knowledge of rare and old books is huge.
When she holds an old book, everything changes. She starts speaking clearly and smoothly, just like turning the pages of a book. She uses her smart thinking and book knowledge to find secrets hidden inside these old books. Each book brings a new mystery and a new story from the past.
Daisuke Gลra works along with her. He is a tall young man who comes to the shop for different reasons. But there is an odd problem. Reading printed words makes him feel dizzy. So he cannot read books himself. This makes them a very unusual pair. One who knows everything about books but cannot talk to people. And one who can talk to people but cannot read. Together, they solve the mysteries brought to the shop.
The Team Behind the 2027 Anime
The studio handling this project is CloverWorks. This is a big reason for fans to feel excited. This studio has made some of the most popular shows in recent years. Their credits include Spy x Family, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, and Darling in the FranXX.
The director is Mamoru Kanbe. He knows mystery stories well. He worked on The Promised Neverland and Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary. Both shows are known for their smart storylines and tense moments. His experience fits perfectly with the tone of Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia.

- Takahiro Obata composing the music. He also created the soundtracks for The Promised Neverland.

Voice Cast Brings Characters to Life
The announcement also shared who will voice the two main characters.
Riko Akechi will play Shioriko Shinokawa. She is known for her role as Poemu Kohinata in The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt. Akechi shared a personal story about getting this role. She first saw the character when she was in her first year of middle school. She was at the library and saw a beautiful woman on a book cover through a glass bookshelf. That image stayed with her.

A Beloved Series with Millions of Readers
The original novels have a huge following. Author En Mikami started the series in March 2011. The publisher is Kadokawa under their Media Works Bunko label. Artist Hagu Koshijima created the illustrations for the books.
The series has sold over 8.5 million copies. That number shows how many readers love these stories. The quality of the writing is also recognized by experts. The series got nominations for the Japan Mystery Writers Association Award in both 2012 and 2014.
The 12th volume of the novel is set to release on April 24, 2026. This is just days after the anime announcement. The timing allows new readers to catch up on the books before the show arrives.
Previous Adaptations and the Wait for Anime
This is not the first time the story has been adapted for the screen. A live-action TV drama aired in 2013. Ayame Goriki played Shioriko. The show ran on Fuji TV from January to March of that year. Crunchyroll streamed the drama globally in 2014.
A live-action movie also opened in November 2018. Haru Kuroki and Shuhei Nomura starred in the film.
The path to an anime has been long. In 2017, Kadokawa announced both a live-action movie and an anime film. The live-action movie happened. But the anime film project never moved forward.
