Apple recently launched its new Mac Studio models in India, featuring the powerful M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. While the base model starts at a more manageable price, the fully loaded version with the M5 Ultra chip and all available upgrades costs more than ₹21 lakh. This price puts it in the same range as a luxury car or a small apartment in many Indian cities.

The maxed-out Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra processor, 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, 512GB unified memory, and 16TB storage is priced at ₹21,65,900 in India. The base M5 Ultra model starts at ₹6,29,900, but adding all the high-end components pushes the price to this staggering figure.

What Makes the M5 Ultra Mac Studio So Expensive?

The M5 Ultra chip is Apple’s most powerful processor ever created. It combines two M5 Max chips using Apple’s UltraFusion technology, creating a quad-die architecture with over 4.4TB/s of inter-die bandwidth. This allows the four dies to work as a single processor, delivering exceptional performance.

The chip features a 36-core CPU with 12 super cores and 24 performance cores, delivering up to 1.3x higher multithreaded performance than the M3 Ultra. The 80-core GPU is the most powerful Apple chip graphics processor ever made. The 512GB unified memory is a major cost driver, as RAM prices have increased significantly due to what industry experts call “RAMageddon”.

Apple’s chief hardware officer Johny Srouji called the M5 Ultra Mac Studio:

“the ultimate desktop for on-device AI and the world’s most demanding pro workflows”

The machine also includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 for the first time on a Mac Studio, along with Thunderbolt 5 ports offering up to 120Gb/s bandwidth. The SSD architecture has been upgraded to PCIe Gen 6, making storage twice as fast as previous models.

Why Is the Price So High in India?

The ₹21.66 lakh price tag for the fully loaded Mac Studio is not just because of the powerful components. Several factors contribute to this high cost in India:

Global memory shortage: The AI data center boom has created an unprecedented supply squeeze on memory components. Companies building massive AI infrastructure have been pre-ordering huge volumes of RAM, tightening supply for consumer hardware and pushing up costs.

Import duties and taxes: Apple products in India attract significant import duties and taxes, which add to the final price. The M5 Ultra model starts at $5,499 in the US (roughly ₹5.22 lakh) but costs ₹6,29,900 in India. The price difference becomes even more pronounced at higher configurations.

Currency conversion: The dollar-to-rupee conversion rate also affects pricing. While the US price for the maxed-out configuration is $18,299, the Indian price of ₹21.66 lakh reflects the exchange rate and additional costs.

Who Is This Machine For?

The Mac Studio with M5 Ultra is not designed for average consumers. It targets professionals who need extreme computing power for:

  • AI researchers and data scientists running large language models (LLMs) with hundreds of billions of parameters locally on the device
  • Video editors working with uncompressed 8K footage in real time
  • 3D designers and architects handling complex rendering projects
  • Software developers working on demanding applications
  • Content creators who need massive memory and storage for their workflows

The 512GB unified memory is critical for running enormous AI models entirely on the device, something that was previously impossible without cloud computing. Users can also cluster multiple Mac Studio systems together over Thunderbolt 5, creating a shared memory pool across systems.

Availability in India

Pre-orders for the new Mac Studio began on August 25, 2026. The devices will be available for purchase in India starting September 22, 2026.

However, the maxed-out 512GB unified memory configuration will not be available until late October 2026. Apple has not yet announced the exact pricing for this specific configuration, but based on the component costs and US pricing, it is expected to be the ₹21.66 lakh figure.

The M5 Max version starts at ₹2,79,900, while the M5 Ultra begins at ₹6,29,900. Education pricing is available at ₹2,56,900 and ₹5,84,900 respectively. Apple is also offering up to six months of no-interest EMI and up to ₹10,000 cashback on Mac Studio with eligible credit cards.

Performance That Justifies the Price

The M5 Ultra delivers extraordinary performance improvements over previous generations:

  • Up to 4.3x faster AI performance compared to the M3 Ultra
  • 9.8x faster AI performance than the M1 Ultra
  • 1.3x higher multi-core performance over the M3 Ultra
  • 50% higher memory bandwidth at 1.2TB/s
  • Up to 40% faster graphics performance than the M3 Ultra

The Neural Accelerators built into each GPU core deliver dramatically faster matrix multiplication. This makes the Mac Studio perfect for on-device AI workloads, including prompt processing and running frontier-class AI models.

Apple’s Focus on AI Computing

Apple has positioned the new Mac Studio as “a monumental step for AI”. The company is clearly targeting the growing AI market, where professionals need powerful local computing for AI inference and model training. The ability to run large language models entirely on the device is a significant advantage for researchers who want to avoid cloud computing costs and latency issues.

The Mac Studio’s compact design, quiet operation, and extensive connectivity make it an attractive option for professionals who need powerful computing without the bulk and noise of traditional workstations. With support for up to eight displays and Thunderbolt 5 clustering, it offers flexibility that few other desktop computers can match.

The price may seem shocking to many, but for professionals who need this level of performance, the Mac Studio with M5 Ultra represents a significant investment in their work. The machine is not meant for casual users or even most creative professionals. It is a specialized tool for those who push the boundaries of what computers can do.
