David Harbour has given Marvel fans a lot to think about regarding the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The actor, who plays Alexei Shostakov (also known as Red Guardian), recently shared that the movie will have a major effect on his character’s bond with Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh. Harbour spoke about this during an interview with Deadline while promoting his new series DTF St. Louis.

The connection between Red Guardian and Yelena has been a key part of their stories since Black Widow in 2021. Their relationship grew stronger in Thunderbolts*, where they showed deep care for each other. Now, Harbour says Avengers: Doomsday will change things between them.

What David Harbour Said About Yelena and Alexei’s Bond

Harbour kept his comments short but meaningful. When asked about the movie, he pointed directly to the relationship between his character and Yelena.

“You know that Yelena Belova and Red Guardian have a connection. If you saw Thunderbolts*, you know how much they love each other and how much they’re trying to help each other. And Doomsday will affect that relationship.”

The actor did not give away any specific plot points. He did not say if the change would be good or bad. But his words have already started many conversations among fans.

This is not the first time Harbour has talked about the movie. At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, he spoke with Entertainment Weekly about how the New Avengers and the original Avengers do not see eye to eye.

“I mean, there’s trouble for sure. We definitely approach things differently than those guys, and we have different ideas about how to do things.”

What Fans Think Will Happen in the Movie

Since Harbour did not give many details, fans have started guessing what could happen. Two main ideas have come up from his comments.

The first idea is that Avengers: Doomsday might be the last movie for Alexei Shostakov. Some fans think Red Guardian could die or leave the team in some way. This would be a big emotional moment for Yelena, who sees him as a father figure.

The second idea is that the father-daughter duo might have to fight each other. This could happen if they end up on different sides of a conflict. The movie involves three different universes on a crash course, which could force heroes to make hard choices.

There is also a third possibility mentioned by some fans. The first Doomsday trailer showed a fight sequence that could involve Mystique transforming into Red Guardian. This would create confusion and tension between Yelena and who she thinks is Alexei.

Where Yelena and Alexei Stand After Thunderbolts*

To understand what might happen, it helps to look at where these characters are now. Thunderbolts* ended with the team getting a new name. They are now called the New Avengers.

Both Yelena Belova and Alexei Shostakov are part of this new team. The post-credit scene of Thunderbolts* showed that there will be some conflict between the New Avengers and the main Avengers team, which is led by Sam Wilson as Captain America.

This conflict could put Yelena and Alexei in a difficult position. They may have to choose between loyalty to their new team and doing what they think is right.

The Massive Cast of Avengers: Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday has one of the biggest casts ever seen in a Marvel movie. The film brings together heroes from many different parts of the Marvel universe.

Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU, but this time as Doctor Doom instead of Iron Man. The Russo brothers are back to direct, returning for their first Marvel film since Avengers: Endgame.

The cast also includes actors from the 2000s X-Men franchise. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Channing Tatum are all reprising their roles.

Other heroes appearing include the Fantastic Four, heroes from Wakanda, and Sam Wilson’s Avengers team. With so many characters, the movie has a lot to handle.

What the Movie Is About

The official description for Avengers: Doomsday says the film follows heroes from three different universes. They are on a crash course with each other and face a threat unlike anything they have seen before.

The movie deals with incursions, which are events that can wipe out entire universes. This is a huge threat that requires many heroes to work together.

With so many characters and such a big threat, the movie needs to make sure audiences care about the heroes. Harbour’s comments suggest that the emotional connections between characters will be important.

Release Date and Where to Watch

Avengers: Doomsday will release in theaters on December 18, 2026. The movie will be available exclusively in theaters, so fans will need to go to the cinema to watch it.

Tickets are already on sale in many places. The film is being shown in Premium Large Format theaters under a new format called Infinity Vision.
