T.O.P (Choi Seung Hyun) recently shared his insights into his portrayal of the character “Thanos” in the second season of the hit Netflix drama “Squid Game.” His candid remarks about the character’s cringe-worthy nature have garnered significant attention.

In a video released on Netflix Korea’s YouTube channel, T.O.P discussed his approach to playing Thanos. He revealed that he collaborated closely with the director to develop a distinctive character. T.O.P aimed to create a character that viewers would find both uncomfortable and amusing, using outdated and exaggerated gestures. He explained, “I wanted to design and create a unique, never-before-seen character. I used gestures that were outdated and exaggerated to make viewers feel uncomfortable and unsure about whether they find him annoying or cringey. I wanted viewers to sense an odd vibe from him.”

Crafting a Cringey Character

T.O.P described how he incorporated old-fashioned language into Thanos’s dialogue to emphasize the character’s past. He gave an example, “‘You’re lecturing me when you ended up in this shithole too?’ From those lines, you can infer that Thanos the rapper is stuck in the past. He worked actively in the 2000s before his career fell apart.” He also confessed to actively trying to make Thanos even more cringeworthy, saying, “I talked with the director to find ways for Thanos to come off as more cringey. So I tried to maximize his expressions.”

The Rap Scene and Beyond

Reflecting on Thanos’s rap performance in front of Kang Mi Na (Song Ji Woo), T.O.P admitted, “I’m really cringing.” He elaborated on the challenges of the scene, stating, “I’ve rapped for more than 20 years of my life, but I’ve never rapped for a woman to get her attention. So, I was nearly losing my mind while filming this scene.”

T.O.P also revealed his contribution to Thanos’s rap, explaining that he worked with the director to refine the original script. “The rap in the original script was longer and had more words, but the director told me to freely imagine what kind of rap Thanos would perform, and then we discussed it together. I thought it would be better to keep the word count low. I filmed a video on my phone and sent it to him, and we discussed doing over-the-top gestures.”

His dedication to the role clearly paid off, as Thanos has become a memorable character in “Squid Game 2.” Fans are now looking forward to the third and final season of the series, which is expected to premiere in 2025.
