A new store exclusive variant cover for Ben 10 #1 is turning heads by mixing Western comics with popular manga. The Animocity exclusive cover features Diamondhead in a pose that directly pays tribute to Kaiju No. 8 Volume 1, creating one of the most talked-about variant covers of the year.

The cover, drawn by Carlos M. Velez, shows Diamondhead in a mid-transformation state. The alien hero appears to be breaking apart, with his crystal body cracking open to reveal something underneath. This is the same visual idea used on the cover of Naoya Matsumoto‘s Kaiju No. 8 Volume 1, where the main character Kafka Hibino splits open to show his kaiju form coming out.

The connection between the two characters makes this tribute work well. Both Diamondhead and Kafka Hibino deal with having a powerful “other” inside them. Kafka turns into a kaiju monster. Diamondhead is a Petrosapien from the planet Petropia who can control his crystal body. The cover shows that shared idea of inner power breaking out.

What Makes This Ben 10 #1 Variant Cover Special

The Animocity exclusive is limited to only 400 copies. Fans can order it directly from the animocity.store website. The cover stands out from other Ben 10 #1 variants because it directly references a specific manga volume that many readers recognize.

Other variant covers for the first issue include work from artists like Robert Carey, Duncan Rouleau, Dustin Nguyen, Sebastian Piriz, and Eric Canete. There is also a landscape cover from Lucas Lee Garza available through the Dynamite website. Some mystery blind bags from Dynamite may also include other undisclosed covers.

But none of those connect anime and Western comics in the same direct way as this Kaiju No. 8 homage. The cover takes a famous manga image and puts a Ben 10 character in that same situation. It is a smart way to bring together fans of both series.

The Source Material Behind the Cover

Kaiju No. 8 is a manga that ran on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ platform from July 2020 until July 2025. The series produced 16 volumes in total. The story follows Kafka Hibino, a man who works cleaning up kaiju remains. He wants to join the Defense Force to fight monsters, but his age holds him back. After a strange encounter, he gains the ability to turn into a kaiju himself.

The first volume cover became famous because it shows Kafka literally splitting in half, with his kaiju form emerging from his human body. That single image helped the series sell over 8 million copies in its first few years. The cover art became the face of the whole series.

Carlos M. Velez took that famous image and applied it to Diamondhead. The crystal alien hero breaks apart in the same way, with his body cracking and shifting. The composition matches the original almost exactly, but the character is completely different.

Release Information for Ben 10 #1

Ben 10 #1 from Dynamite Entertainment arrives in comic shops on May 6, 2026. The issue will be available in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and other countries through local comic book stores and online retailers.

Pre-orders are already open for the Animocity exclusive variant. Other variant covers are also available for pre-order from different retailers. The standard edition of the first issue will be widely available at comic shops worldwide on the release date.

The Animocity exclusive cover by Carlos M. Velez is a store exclusive. That means fans can only get it through Animocity’s own website or possibly at their physical location. With only 400 copies printed, it will likely sell out quickly.

Why This Cover Matters for Collectors

Comic variant covers have become a big part of collecting. Stores order exclusive variants to bring in customers. Artists get hired to create special covers that stand out from the main artwork. The Animocity cover for Ben 10 #1 takes this idea further by pulling from a popular manga instead of just making another standard superhero pose.

The Kaiju No. 8 manga ended in July 2025, but its popularity remains strong. Fans of that series who might not normally buy a Ben 10 comic could pick up this issue just for the cover. That is exactly what store exclusives are supposed to do.

The cover also shows respect for both properties. It does not just copy the Kaiju No. 8 cover for no reason. It finds a real connection between the two characters and their situations. Both Kafka Hibino and Diamondhead have powers that change their bodies. Both struggle with what those powers mean. Putting Diamondhead in that famous pose makes sense on a creative level.

Carlos M. Velez understood the assignment. His artwork captures the energy of the original Kaiju No. 8 cover while making it clearly about Ben 10. Diamondhead looks like he is in pain, like something is forcing its way out. That matches the feeling of Kafka’s transformation perfectly.
