The wait for Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler’s return is finally over. Dutton Ranch, the latest chapter in Taylor Sheridan’s hit universe, dropped its first two episodes on Paramount+, and the couple is already in deep trouble. They lost their home, made a dangerous enemy, and found a dead body on their new land—all before the first hour ended.

The new series picks up right where Yellowstone left off but quickly burns that happy ending to the ground. Here is a breakdown of the major twists from the premiere episodes, titled “The Untold Want” and “Earn Another Day.”

Fire Forces Beth and Rip to Start Over in Texas

When Yellowstone finished, Beth and Rip finally escaped the drama of the main ranch. They bought a small property in Dillon, Montana, hoping for a quiet life. That dream does not last long.

Just minutes into the premiere, a massive wildfire destroys everything they own. They manage to save the horses, cattle, and their son Carter (Finn Little) , but the house turns to ash. With no money left to rebuild in Montana, Rip calls an old friend, Walker, for help. He tells them about a 5,000-acre property for sale in Rio Paloma, Texas.

Beth calculates that buying this new ranch is cheaper than rebuilding from scratch. They pack up and head south, buying the land from a widow named Jeanie. Rip names it Dutton Ranch. The town of Rio Paloma looks peaceful, but the locals are not happy to see new faces.

Meet Beulah Jackson: Beth’s New Rival

The biggest obstacle for Beth in Texas is Beulah Jackson, played by Annette Bening. Beulah runs the massive 10 Petal Ranch and controls almost everything in the county, especially the cattle market.

When Beth tries to find a slaughterhouse for her beef, Beulah blocks her. She tells Beth she only processes cattle from her own ranch now. Beth calls her an extortionist and walks out, starting a war immediately.

“Fighting for the legacy of her ranch, she tries to control everything around her, which is kind of a recipe for disaster.” – Annette Bening on her character Beulah

The tension explodes at a local cattle auction. Beth and Rip publicly outbid Beulah for a prized bull, embarrassing her in front of the whole town. This makes Beulah furious and sets up a long fight for control of Rio Paloma.

A Murder and a Body Nobody Is Talking About

While Beth fights business battles, Rip finds a much darker problem on their new land. The premiere reveals that before Beth and Rip even signed the papers for the ranch, a murder happened on the property.

Beulah’s grandson, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) , is a violent hothead. He wakes up a ranch hand named Wes in the middle of the night, accuses him of snooping around, and shoots him in the head. Rob-Will and another wrangler named Chet bury the body in a field—the same field that now belongs to Rip.

Later, Rip is riding the fence line when he sees vultures circling. He digs up the field and finds Wes’s body. He does not tell Beth. Instead, Rip takes matters into his own hands. In the middle of the night, he loads the corpse into a truck and dumps it into an abandoned mine shaft, hiding the crime from his wife.

How Carter’s Romance Creates a Major Problem

Carter is now a teenager trying to fit in at a new high school. He meets a girl named Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) and immediately falls for her. He gets into a fight defending her, which makes Beth suspicious.

The twist comes at the end of the second episode. Oreana is not just a random local girl. She is Rob-Will’s daughter, making her Beulah’s granddaughter. Carter has accidentally started a romance with the granddaughter of his family’s biggest enemy.

Rip is also keeping the secret of the dead body. Since Rip hid the corpse in the mine, and Oreana is the killer’s daughter, the situation is a ticking time bomb. If Beulah finds out Rip moved the body, or if the dead man’s family keeps asking questions, the Dutton Ranch will turn into a war zone.

Beth Finds an Ally in Ed Harris’ Character

Beth does not make friends easily, but she finds a powerful ally in Everett McKinney, played by Ed Harris. Everett is a retired Navy veteran who works as the local veterinarian.

When Beth saves an injured mare, she pays Everett to fix the horse. The two form an unlikely friendship. Everett helps Beth solve her slaughterhouse problem by connecting her to an independent meatpacking plant near San Antonio.

The second episode ends with the three of them—Beth, Rip, and Everett—relaxing at a local bar while Everett plays country songs on stage. It is a rare moment of peace, but everyone knows it will not last.

Dutton Ranch is streaming now on Paramount+. New episodes drop every Friday.
