Prime Video’s The Ghost in the Shell released Episode 8, titled “INTERMISSION + BRAIN DRAIN i,” on August 25, 2026. The episode shows Major Motoko Kusanagi dealing with the aftermath of her dive into the Puppet Master’s consciousness from Episode 7. She keeps sensing the mysterious entity at odd moments, and things take a dangerous turn when she makes a critical error during a terrorist raid.
The episode also explores the origins of the Puppet Master through the “Project 2501” storyline, giving viewers a look at how this digital life form came into existence.
Episode 8 Picks Up After Major’s Dive into the Puppet Master
Episode 7 left viewers with a major moment. The Puppet Master showed up, called itself a new form of life, and Major Kusanagi connected with it in a way that blurred the lines between human and machine. That connection pushed her somewhere unfamiliar.
Episode 8 begins with Major Kusanagi waking up after that dive. But she is not the same. She starts sensing the Puppet Master’s presence at random times, even though there is no sign that the entity is still around. The episode does not confirm if the Puppet Master has taken control of her or merged with her. The connection stays deliberately unclear.
Batou, voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto, notices that something is different about Major. He tries to lighten the mood with his usual humor rather than turning the talk into a serious interrogation. That small change matters because Major rarely gives away what is going on inside her head.
The Episode Shows the Puppet Master’s Origins

The episode shows an anime-original scene set in 2025 that reveals the background of “Project 2501”. Section 6 used P2501 as a hacking program. Section 9 Takes on a Terrorist Mission
The second half of Episode 8 moves to “BRAIN DRAIN i,” where Section 9 takes on a mission at sea. The team goes after terrorists on a vessel. The mission starts like a straightforward takedown.
Section 9 takes down the terrorists one by one. But during the operation, Major Kusanagi accidentally shoots the terrorist leader. This is a disturbing mistake because Major is known for her control during operations. Her split-second decisions are normally one of Section 9’s biggest strengths.
When Aramaki asks her what happened, Major cannot clearly explain herself. Batou also feels that something is off with her since the Puppet Master incident.

Throughout Episode 8, Major Kusanagi seems drained of energy and focus. There is a listlessness to her mood that stands in stark contrast to the energy she showed in earlier episodes. The episode does not try to explain her experience clearly. In some ways, she seems to have had a deeply spiritual experience.
