The latest episode of House of the Dragon has arrived, and instead of giving fans clear answers, it has created even more confusion. Episode 5 of Season 3, titled “Unbowed and Unbent,” dropped on July 20, 2026, and it has everyone talking about the mysteries it left behind. Queen Rhaenyra’s hold on King’s Landing is getting weaker, and new threats are appearing from all sides. The episode focused less on dragon battles and more on political schemes, secret plots, and character moments that set up bigger conflicts.
The Gold Cloak Murders Create a Big Mystery
The biggest question from Episode 5 is about the Gold Cloaks. Throughout the episode, members of the City Watch are being killed one by one. Daemon Targaryen arrives at the City Watch barracks to find a horrifying scene. His men are sitting dead around a long table with their eyes scratched out. The wall behind them has the words “A Feast for Traitors” written in blood. Ser Luthor Largent, the head of the City Watch, is among the dead. This moment changes everything for Daemon, who commanded the City Watch for years.
The episode reveals that Ormund Hightower is the mastermind behind these murders. He is paying assassins in Flea Bottom to kill the Gold Cloaks. His goal is to weaken Rhaenyra’s defenses and cause problems inside King’s Landing. A note sent to Ormund reads: “Gold blood spilled. Three marked in the tally. The account lies open”. This confirms he is running the operation from a distance.
Daemon tortures a captured man who says he was working for “King Daeron Targaryen”. A coin with Daeron’s face is found, linking the murders directly to Ormund’s plans. But one captured assassin claims he acted alone, leaving Daemon with more questions than answers.
This storyline is completely new and does not appear in George R.R. Martin’s book Fire and Blood. The show added this plot to create more tension and mystery.
Alicent and Helaena’s Escape Attempt Ends in a Trap
Another major question from Episode 5 involves Alicent Hightower and her daughter Queen Helaena. Alicent tries to convince Helaena to drink moon tea, which would end her pregnancy. Helaena is pregnant with Aegon II’s heir, and Alicent sees this as a danger. But Helaena refuses, screaming “It’s mine!”. She will not give up her baby.
After failing to convince Helaena, Alicent decides they must escape the Red Keep. They try to leave dressed as maids, but Mysaria, the new Master of Whisperers, catches them. Mysaria sends them to a room that has a secret passage. Helaena and Alicent find the passage and escape, but they reach a dead end. The mother and daughter are stuck there at the end of the episode.

Ormund’s Abusive Behavior Toward Daeron Raises Concerns
Episode 5 also suggests that Ormund Hightower is abusive toward his nephew Daeron Targaryen. In one scene, the two are playing Cyvasse, which is like chess in Westeros. Daeron makes a winning move using the dragon piece, which upsets Ormund. Daeron tries to take back his move, but Ormund aggressively holds his nephew’s hand and throws all the pieces off the board. Ser Criston Cole has one of the most compelling arcs in Episode 5. His forces are struggling to reach their destination. Lord Oscar Tully and his Rivermen army are blocking the way. Criston and his men face booby traps and harsh conditions during their march.
Criston reaches a breaking point. He announces that he plans to mount a suicidal attack on the enemy’s forces. He is tired of a war where dragons are more powerful than any warrior. He wants to die on his own terms, saying:
“I will not let them diminish me now. I am the realm’s greatest warrior, and I will die as such, clear-eyed, unbent, glorious in battle, and not in their service, finally, but in my own. And they will sing songs of it, and Queen Alicent herself will hear them.”
This speech shows how much Criston has changed. He is no longer just a loyal soldier. He wants to be remembered. Fabien Frankel delivers one of his best performances in this episode, bringing new depth to the character.
Rhaenyra Faces Growing Pressure
Queen Rhaenyra continues to struggle in Episode 5. She feels like something is working against her, telling Daemon she senses “something crouched, something formless”. Daemon dismisses her concerns at first, calling it exhaustion.
The royal treasury is empty, and many employees remain unpaid. This makes it easier for Ormund to turn people against Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra is becoming more isolated as pressure mounts from every direction. Her conversations with Daemon show a ruler struggling to separate instinct from fear.
Aemond’s Recovery at Harrenhal
Aemond Targaryen is still recovering at Harrenhal. Alys Rivers is nursing him back to health. She also comforts him when he is tormented by visions of his brother Aegon dying. Aemond is convinced his family does not love him. Meanwhile, Aegon is also convinced his family does not love him. This parallel shows how broken the Targaryen family has become.
Bounty hunters show up at Harrenhal looking for Aemond, but Alys tells them she knows nothing. Aemond is out of his sick bed and swinging a sword by the end of the episode. This means he will likely cause trouble again soon.
