Two years after Season 2 left fans hanging with a slow-burning setup, HBO has dropped the first full trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3. The new footage, released April 27, 2026, shows the Dance of the Dragons reaching its bloody peak. The series is finally making good on a promise made right at the beginning: all-out war between the Blacks and the Greens.

The trailer arrived following a CCXP Mexico panel where stars Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Fabien Frankel teased what is coming. Showrunner Ryan Condal called this “the biggest weโ€™ve made by any margin and by a wide measure.”

Rhaenyra Claims the Iron Throne as Bloodshed Begins

The new teaser opens with Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) seizing control of King’s Landing. She sits on the Iron Throne, but the victory looks hollow. Her husband, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), promises her, “Our children will rule it forever and a day.”

But Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) offers a grim warning: “All that remains is for you to decide what you want from this war.” The trailer then cuts to Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), appearing before Rhaenyra in a hooded cloak. She tells the queen, “You will do things that your heart would recoiled from before you came to the throne.”

In India, the show will stream a day later on JioHotstar. UK viewers can watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW on June 22.

This marks a return to form for the franchise. After Season 2 ended just as the war was starting, Condal promised Season 3 goes “very hot very, very quickly.”

Matt Smith Promises a ‘More Brutal’ Season With Major Battles

Matt Smith told the crowd in Mexico City that the cast aimed to make the season “bigger, bolder, bloodier, more brutal, more dangerous.” He added they wanted to “get back to the nuts and bolts of what we are as a show.”

The trailer teases two massive battles from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. The first is the Battle of the Gullet, a naval conflict where Lord Corlys Velaryon’s fleet faces off against the Greens. This fight reportedly kills two dragons and one major dragonrider.

The second is the Butcher’s Ball, where one character finally meets a brutal end. The trailer also shows Ewan Mitchell’s Prince Aemond burning everything to the ground on his dragon, Vhagar.

James Norton Joins the Cast as a Key Hightower Leader

Season 3 introduces James Norton (Grantchester, Happy Valley) as Lord Ormund Hightower. He is Alicent’s cousin and the head of the Hightower army. In the trailer, he rallies the common people, calling the Targaryens “savages.”

Fans noticed the addition immediately. Norton’s character leads the Greens’ military response. The trailer also hints at the rivalry between brothers Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Aemond. A scarred Aegon swears to kill his brother “or die in the attempt.”

One fan commented, “This will be peak Cinema.” Another dared HBO to “release all the episodes at once.”

The Trailer Fulfills the Show’s Original Promise

When House of the Dragon first aired in 2022, the marketing focused on the Targaryen civil war. Season 1 built the rivalry between Rhaenyra and Alicent. Season 2 set the pieces on the board but ended before the big battles.

Season 3’s tagline is “From Fire Comes Darkness.” Fabien Frankel, who plays Ser Criston Cole, warns in the trailer: “Doom and ruin surround us.”
