The team behind the new science-fiction thriller Imposters just got a major boost. Steven Schneider, the producer known for the Paranormal Activity and Insidious horror franchises, has officially joined the project as an executive producer.
Schneider came on board after seeing the film at the SXSW festival in Austin last month. The movie, which is the first feature film from writer-director Caleb Phillips, caught his attention for its mix of genres and strong acting. He is now helping the film under his indie genre label, Spooky Pictures.
What is Imposters About?
Imposters tells a very tense and personal story. The plot centers on a couple whose baby boy disappears. The mother, who is desperate with grief, finds a way to bring him back. But the father starts to believe that the child who returned is not really their son.
The story mixes science-fiction with horror and mystery. Director Caleb Phillips has said the film was inspired by his own parents. He wants to show how much damage two people can do to themselves and the people around them when they refuse to change. The official synopsis says the movie explores a mother’s desperate efforts that lead to something truly twisted.
Who Stars in the Imposters Cast?
The movie has a strong lead cast. Jessica Rothe, famous for the Happy Death Day movies, plays the mother. Charlie Barnett, known for Russian Doll and Andor, plays the husband. The cast also includes Yul Vazquez from the popular show Severance, along with Bates Wilder, Luisina Quarleri, and Thomas Parobek.
Steven Schneider’s Statement on Joining Imposters
The producer shared his excitement about the film in a clear statement. He explained that he saw the movie’s international potential right away at the SXSW festival.
“When I came across ‘Imposters’ at SXSW this year, the project’s international potential was immediately evident – its genre-bending storyline, anchored by stellar performances, make it a relentlessly gripping experience that is already captivating horror fans.” Schneider said. “It’s a privilege to work with the hugely talented Caleb Phillips on his first of what will surely be many thrilling features, reinforcing our continued commitment to backing emerging talent – and I look forward to helping this exhilarating project reach new heights.”
Who Else is Behind the Film?
Caleb Phillips is not a new name in the genre world. He directed a horror short called Other Side of the Box. That short film won the Midnight Short Award at SXSW in 2019 and also won an Audience Award at a film festival in South Korea. It has over 26 million views online and is known as one of the most watched horror shorts ever.
The production team includes Thomas Bond and Sara Seligman for Broken Pig Productions. Joe Bandelli, who worked on the Hell House LLC franchise, also produces. Blue Finch Films is handling worldwide sales for the movie.
Festival Success and Critical Response
Imposters made its world premiere on March 15, 2026, at the SXSW festival in the Midnighter section. The movie played to strong crowds and received good early reviews from critics.
Meagan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting wrote in her review, “Imposters is a confident debut, one that keeps you guessing with its mystery setup and shifty protagonists.”
The film has also been selected for many other festivals around the world. It will play at the Calgary Underground Film Festival on April 17, 2026, as a Canadian premiere. Other festival selections include Beyond Fest Chicago, Fantaspoa, the Cleveland International Film Festival, Fantasy FilmFest Nights in Germany, and the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF).
