What Is The Flood About

The Flood reportedly takes place in deep space, following a captain and her crew as they investigate a cryptic signal from a distant world. Early reports describe the crew encountering an alien artifact that warps time, reality, and their sanity, forcing them into a confrontation with an incomprehensible intelligence. Those details have drawn comparisons to Ridley Scott’s Alien, though Cregger has been careful to distinguish his film from a conventional creature feature.

Cregger told Men’s Health in mid-September that The Flood shares something with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey in its ambition and strangeness. “I’m not comparing [The Flood] to 2001, because I think 2001 is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word. But there’s a bizarreness to that movie that’s really undeniable, and it’s also a horror movie,” he said. “I think 2001 is a really thrilling horror movie about human nature, and obviously about artificial intelligence, but it asks big questions. And I think, in that way, there’s some similarity with Flood”.

He also made clear that The Flood is not a straight horror movie, despite containing horror sequences. “It unfolds in a very unique way that I’m really proud of. It’s disturbing, but it’s not a horror movie, although there are horror scenes in it. It feels intimidating to me. I’m still not really sure how to make it, but I think that’s a good thing,” Cregger said.

How Zach Cregger Came Up With The Flood

Cregger has described an unusually intense origin for the screenplay. The idea came together during a five-day window when an opportunity arose to develop something with Spielberg. While watching a movie with his wife, actress Sara Paxton, a comment about the terror of being trapped in space unlocked the concept. “My wife was like, ‘There’s nothing scarier than being trapped in space,’” Cregger recalled. “And then this character goes into the ship and they find something that was pretty weird and scared them. And I was thinking, ‘What would be weirder and scarier than that?’”.

He has called the script structurally bizarre and said it feels more like Weapons than Resident Evil in its sophistication. “Flood is very cerebral, it’s more sophisticated, it feels more like Weapons. It’s much more like something that [I can] maybe put on my tombstone,” he told The Big Picture podcast. “And Resident Evil was this little playtime to just break up the strain of writing Flood”.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Role and Casting

Plot details and the identity of Lawrence’s character remain under wraps. She is expected to play the captain at the center of the deep-space crew, based on early character descriptions. Warner Bros. Motion Picture chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy praised the casting in a statement: “Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today, and we are thrilled to have her at the center of Zach’s bold and wholly original vision for The Flood”.

Cregger added, “Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role”. Lawrence won the Best Actress Oscar in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook and is known globally for the Hunger Games franchise. She recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for Die My Love.

When Does The Flood Begin Production

Production is due to begin in Europe in the first months of 2027, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Warner Bros. and New Line picked up the project out of turnaround from Netflix earlier in 2026, reuniting Cregger with the studio behind Weapons. The film was officially announced as part of Warner Bros.’ 2028 slate at CinemaCon in April 2026, alongside Cregger’s Weapons spinoff Gladys, which will continue the story of Amy Madigan’s Oscar-winning character.

Where Will The Flood Be Released

The Flood is set for a global theatrical release on August 11, 2028, through Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. No streaming platform has been announced, and the film is not currently tied to any day-and-date release. Theatrical distribution through Warner Bros. covers major markets including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India, with worldwide rollout handled by the studio’s international arm.

Zach Cregger’s Directing Run After Weapons

Cregger’s career has accelerated sharply over the past four years. Barbarian (2022) established him as a distinctive voice in horror. Weapons (2025) became a commercial and critical breakthrough, leading the domestic box office for four consecutive weeks and earning $270 million worldwide off a budget under $40 million. The film won Amy Madigan a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Resident Evil, released on September 18, 2026, became the highest-grossing film in that franchise and boosted sales of the Resident Evil 2 Remake by more than 50% on PlayStation 5. The Flood marks Cregger’s return to original material after the franchise detour.
