Jensen Ackles has signed on to lead a new crime thriller series for MGM+, the premium channel available through Prime Video. The project is called Rules of Prey, and it marks his second detective lead role on the Amazon platform in two years. The announcement arrived in September 2026, nearly a year after his first Prime Video detective series, Countdown, was canceled after one season.
What Is Rules of Prey About
Rules of Prey is an eight-episode crime thriller based on the first novel in John Sandford’s long-running Prey book series, published in 1989. Ackles will play Lucas Davenport, a former Minneapolis Police Department detective who is pulled back into law enforcement when a serial killer starts sending him personal messages through a string of murders.
The official logline describes Davenport as a “brilliant polymath and unconventional investigator” who enters a psychological duel with a killer who sees their conflict as a game. Davenport left the force because of his unwillingness to let the law stand in the way of justice, which makes him a different kind of detective than the ones usually seen on television.
When an ingenious serial killer begins murdering Minneapolis citizens, Davenport, a brilliant polymath and unconventional investigator, takes the case, sparking an intense psychological duel with an equally intelligent adversary.
Bruce Terris, who recently worked on DTF St. Louis, created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Daniel Sackheim, whose directing credits include Game of Thrones, will direct the first two episodes. Ackles is also an executive producer on the project.
The Countdown Cancellation That Came Before
Countdown premiered on Prime Video on June 25, 2025, with a three-episode launch. Ackles starred as LAPD Detective Mark Meachum, who is recruited to a secret task force after a Department of Homeland Security officer is murdered in broad daylight. The 13-episode season ran through September 2025.
The show performed well on streaming charts. It reached number 8 on Nielsen’s Top 10 for streaming originals and stayed in Prime Video’s U.S. Top 10 for more than a month after its finale. Audience scores were stronger than critic scores, with a 63% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes against a 35% critic score.
Prime Video canceled Countdown in October 2025, alongside Daniel Dae Kim’s spy thriller Butterfly. Reports stated the decision came down to total global viewership, with international performance falling below Amazon’s targets. Ackles addressed the cancellation in an Instagram video.
As some of you may have seen already, Countdown did not get picked up for another season. Amazon’s gonna let it go, and it’s a bummer.
The cancellation left the first season on a cliffhanger, which frustrated viewers who had invested in the story. Despite that outcome, Ackles remained under a first-look television deal with Amazon MGM Studios through Chaos Machine, the production company he runs with his wife Danneel Ackles.
Why Prime Video Keeps Casting Him as a Detective
Ackles has built a steady working relationship with Amazon since joining The Boys as Soldier Boy in 2020. That role led to a first-look deal in 2023, which produced Countdown in 2024 and now Rules of Prey in 2026. He also headlines the upcoming The Boys spinoff Vought Rising, which wrapped filming in March 2026 and is scheduled for release in 2027.
The pattern is clear. Even when one project ends, Amazon MGM Studios finds another role for him. Rules of Prey gives him a character with more room to grow than Mark Meachum had in Countdown. Lucas Davenport is a lone-wolf investigator with a sharp mind and a personal code, a type of role that fits Ackles’ strengths as an actor.

The Prey Books Give the Show Long-Term Potential
John Sandford has written 36 books in the Prey series, with Revenge Prey released in April 2026 as the latest entry. That gives the show a deep well of source material if it continues beyond the first season. Two earlier Prey adaptations exist: Mind Prey on ABC in 1995 and Certain Prey on USA Network in 1999, but neither ran as a full series.
The comparison to Reacher, another Prime Video crime series based on a long book series, is already being made. Both feature tough, clever investigators with police backgrounds who do not always follow the rules. The difference is that Davenport evolves as a character across the books, while Reacher remains largely unchanged.

Production and Release Information
Filming for Rules of Prey began in September 2026 in Toronto and runs through December 2026. MGM+ has not announced a premiere date, but the series is expected to arrive in 2027.
Rules of Prey will stream on MGM+ in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile. MGM+ is available as an add-on channel through Prime Video in most of these regions, and also as a standalone service in the U.S. through Amazon.
Countdown season one remains available to stream on Prime Video in the U.S. and select international markets. Vought Rising does not yet have a confirmed release date but is expected on Prime Video in 2027.
