HBO’s new DC series “Lanterns” dropped its second episode on August 23, 2026, and it delivered something completely unexpected. Instead of continuing the present-day story, the show took viewers back to 2016 for an entire 51-minute episode. This flashback format gave audiences a deep look into the Manhunters, a dangerous alien race that is now the main mystery of the season. The episode, titled “Trust Fall,” set up a tense 48-hour countdown for the Green Lanterns to find a Manhunter hiding in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska.
The Flashback Episode Takes Viewers Back to 2016
The second episode of “Lanterns” made a bold choice by staying entirely in the past. There were no cutaways to 2026, where John Stewart and Sheriff Kerry Kane had just found Hal Jordan’s body in the first episode. Instead, the show focused on what happened nine years earlier when Hal Jordan was still alive and training John Stewart. This decision gave the writers room to build the mystery around the Manhunters without rushing through the story.
The episode opened with a classic mentor moment. Hal Jordan woke up his trainee John Stewart by throwing a bucket of water on him. Jordan then tried to teach Stewart how to fly using the Green Lantern ring. Stewart’s first attempt ended with him accidentally creating a bird construct instead of flying. This lighthearted start quickly gave way to serious danger when the ring started running low on power.
Hal Jordan Sends John Stewart on a Dangerous Errand
With the power ring running on low battery, Hal Jordan asked John Stewart to fly to Coast City and get the lantern needed to recharge it. While Stewart was on this mission, Jordan started his own investigation in Rushville. He walked into a town hall meeting and had a tense exchange with Sheriff Kerry Kane. The conversation was cut short when John called for help.
Jordan talked Stewart through finding the lantern inside a pocket dimension at his mansion. Stewart also fed a strange sentient plant just as his mentor had instructed. But before he could leave, unknown assailants kidnapped him. Stewart managed to escape briefly, leading to a thrilling highway chase. The aliens eventually caught him and brought him to their leader.
Antaan Reveals the Manhunter Threat
The kidnapper turned out to be a character named Antaan, played by Paul Ben-Victor. Antaan revealed that Waylon Sanders, the sui*ide bomber from the first episode, was part of his team. He explained that his people had come to Rushville to find a Manhunter that had been hiding in the town for thirty years.
Antaan described the Manhunters as synthetic beings who could build new bodies and disguise themselves as anyone. He told John that the Manhunters were so dangerous that they could wipe out entire species. The Manhunter they were hunting had engineered a holocaust on Antaan’s home planet. A Green Lantern had taken the Manhunter into custody and promised to execute it. Instead, the Manhunter ended up on Earth, hiding in Rushville.
Antaan gave John Stewart 48 hours to find the Manhunter. If Stewart failed, Antaan would send more of his team to destroy the entire town.
Hal Jordan’s Investigation Leads to Trouble
While John was dealing with Antaan, Hal Jordan continued his own investigation. He broke into a morgue and took the bodies of the dead aliens from the first episode. He drove them to the stadium and discovered something important. The stadium’s metal detector did not beep when he carried metal through it. But it did beep when he carried one of the alien bodies through. This meant that William Macon, played by Garret Dillahunt, had installed alien detectors throughout the stadium.
Jordan convinced Sheriff Kane to take him to meet Macon at his ranch. The meeting did not go well. Macon threatened to have one of his men shoot Jordan. Jordan did not back down, and he was shot through his arm. Kane took him to the hospital, where he woke up handcuffed to a bed inside the Rushville police headquarters.
The Manhunters’ Comic Book History Explained
For fans who do not know DC Comics history, the Manhunters have a long and dark backstory. They were created by Jack Kirby and first appeared in 1st Issue Special #5 in August 1975. The Guardians of the Universe built the Manhunters as their first attempt to create an intergalactic police force. The Guardians modeled them after the Manhunters of Mars, which is why the name sounds similar to Martian Manhunter.
Unlike the Green Lanterns, the Manhunters were robots. Over thousands of years, they evolved past their programming. They became so focused on their motto “No Man Escapes the Manhunters” that they started committing atrocities. They carried out mass genocides, including the Massacre of Sector-666. The Guardians tried to destroy them, but some survived and went into hiding.
The show’s creators chose to use the Manhunters because they fit the mystery format. Showrunner Chris Mundy told Entertainment Weekly that they settled on the idea “pretty quickly”. Executive producer Tom King called the Manhunters a “deep, dark secret” of the Guardians.
“It felt like you could have somebody hiding in plain sight and it tied back to the Guardians,” showrunner Chris Mundy explained.
Who Could Be the Manhunter Hiding in Rushville?
The second episode left viewers with a big question. Who is the Manhunter hiding in Rushville? The show has given fans several suspects to consider.
William Macon is an obvious choice. He has a militia and advanced technology like the alien detectors. But his loud approach to fighting aliens does not match Antaan’s description of the Manhunter working “quietly”.
Sheriff Kerry Kane is another suspect. She keeps trying to push Hal and John away from the alien activity in Rushville. The second episode also revealed that she is from Gotham, which could be a cover story for a Manhunter who came from outside the community.
Other characters from the first episode could also be the Manhunter. The show has set up a mystery that will likely play out over the rest of the season.
Sinestro Makes a Chilling Appearance
The end of episode two took viewers off-world. Hal Jordan traveled to an intergalactic prison to confront Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen. Jordan questioned Sinestro about the Manhunters. Sinestro gave a chilling warning. He said that a surviving Manhunter would only be the “second-greatest threat” Hal currently faces. He then pointed to John Stewart as the bigger danger.
This moment raised the stakes for the rest of the season. It also set up a major question about John Stewart’s role in the series. The show has already hinted that Stewart might be more important than anyone realizes.
