The makers of Last Man in Tower have announced that the film will arrive in Indian theatres on September 11, 2026. Directed by Ben Rekhi and produced by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media, the movie is an adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s bestselling novel of the same name.
Alongside the release date announcement, the team also dropped the first teaser, giving audiences a look at Manoj Bajpayee as Masterji, a retired school teacher who chooses to stand alone when his community decides to take a different path. The film marks the first on-screen collaboration between Bajpayee and Boman Irani.
Manoj Bajpayee, Boman Irani and Divya Dutta Lead the Cast
Last Man in Tower brings together a strong ensemble cast. Manoj Bajpayee headlines the film as Masterji, a retired schoolteacher whose refusal to go along with those around him puts him in direct conflict with his own community. Boman Irani plays a pivotal role, while Divya Dutta features as Mrs Puri, a character whose hopes and choices clash with Masterji’s convictions. Sukant Goel also appears in a key role.
Director Ben Rekhi shared his excitement about working with this cast. He said:

The Story Behind Last Man in Tower
The film is based on Aravind Adiga’s novel Last Man in Tower. Adiga is also the author of the Booker Prize-winning book The White Tiger. The story follows Masterji, a retired schoolteacher living in a Mumbai neighbourhood. When a developer offers to buy their building, most residents see it as a chance for a better life. But Masterji refuses to sell. His quiet resistance forces his neighbours to confront their own choices and compromises.
The screenplay has been adapted by Sooni Taraporevala, known for her work on films like Salaam Bombay!, Mississippi Masala and The Namesake. Juhi Chaturvedi, the acclaimed screenwriter of Piku and October, has penned the Hindi-language dialogues.
A Major Milestone for Spirit Media
Last Man in Tower marks an important moment for Spirit Media, the Hyderabad-based production company founded by actor Rana Daggubati in 2005. This is the company’s first Hindi feature production.
Rana Daggubati spoke about why the project stood out to him. He said:
“Last Man in Tower is a deeply human story. What drew us to it was how naturally it finds something universal in the lives of a very specific group of people. There is something very compelling about the way it explores the choices we make and the things we hold on to.”
The Teaser Offers a Glimpse of the Conflict
The teaser for Last Man in Tower does not rush to explain the full story. Instead, it builds tension around a man who refuses to give up his right to stand his ground. It shows Bajpayee as Masterji, a man caught between stubbornness and conviction. The teaser hints at a larger question: what happens when everyone around you sees an opportunity for a better life, but you see something worth protecting?
Boman Irani’s presence adds another layer of intrigue to the ensemble. The pairing of Bajpayee and Irani, who are sharing the screen for the first time, has generated considerable curiosity among audiences.
The Creative Team Behind the Film
Ben Rekhi, the director, is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker. His previous work includes the SXSW Audience Award-winning Waterborne and Watch List, which received 11 nominations at the Filipino Oscars and won two awards. His documentary short The Breakthrough Group qualified for the 2026 Academy Awards in the best documentary short subject category. Last Man in Tower is Rekhi’s sixth feature film.
The film’s music is composed by Govind Vasantha, known for his work on films such as 96 and Meiyazhagan. Rangarajan Ramabadran serves as the cinematographer. Alongside Rana Daggubati, the film is produced by Ben Rekhi, Guneet Dogra and Pratiksha Rao.
