Spider-Man’s most famous lesson is getting a full rewrite in Marvel Comics’ brand-new horror universe. The classic line “With great power comes great responsibility” has defined Peter Parker since his very first appearance in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15. That is a run of 64 years. Now, the Midnight Universe is flipping that idea on its head with a much darker warning: “Power makes monsters.”
The new motto comes from Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist ScieTronc’s Midnight Spider-Man, one of three launch titles for Marvel’s horror-focused imprint arriving in October 2026. This is not a small tweak. The classic line is stepping aside entirely to make room for a phrase rooted in trauma, fear, and a very different view of what power actually does to people.
What Marvel Midnight Universe Actually Is
Marvel Midnight is a new shared universe that reimagines the publisher’s biggest heroes through a horror lens. Three books launch the line on October 7, 2026: Midnight Spider-Man, Midnight Fantastic Four by Benjamin Percy and Kev Walker, and Midnight X-Men by Jonathan Hickman and Matteo Della Fonte .
Phillip Kennedy Johnson made it clear this is not just a label on existing horror comics. He said in an interview:
“Midnight isn’t just a sticker on the cover of all our business-as-usual horror titles. It’s a complete reimagining of the entire Marvel Universe.”
The Midnight Spider-Man series takes Peter Parker into body horror territory. Johnson told interviewers the book draws on influences like David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, and Japanese horror manga legend Junji Ito . Peter is transformed by Oscorp Corporation into a disturbing human-spider hybrid, with a spider embedded in his chest, as part of the company’s obsession with immortality .
The Dark New Motto: Power Makes Monsters
“Power makes monsters” replaces the classic Spider-Man creed in this universe. The phrase comes from Peter’s late father, Richard Parker, and becomes the central lens through which Peter views power and the world . It is not just a catchphrase. It shapes the entire emotional core of the series.
The dark meaning behind the motto connects directly to a childhood trauma. When Peter was young, he had a kitten named Bamf. A single moment of carelessness led to the kitten getting outside and dying. Peter’s memory of the event is even more disturbing: he recalls spiders crawling out of the cat’s dead body .
Johnson explained the motto’s core meaning in an interview, describing how the most powerful people in this world avoid consequences:
“The richest and most powerful take responsibility for nothing, are held accountable for nothing.”
The writer also described the book as an “anti-Epstein class” story where “the monster is the creepy billionaire” . This gives the new motto a sharp, real-world edge that the classic responsibility line does not carry in the same way.
Why the Change Matters After 64 Years
The original line first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962, not as Uncle Ben’s dying words, but as the comic’s closing narration . Over six decades, it became the single most quoted piece of Spider-Man lore. The 2002 Sam Raimi film cemented it in popular culture, and Aunt May delivered a version of it in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home .
The Midnight Universe does not erase that history. It exists alongside the main Marvel continuity. The classic Peter Parker stories are still being published. But the new motto offers a different answer to the same question: what should a person with power do? The classic line says power brings duty. The new line says power brings corruption.
Johnson’s view of Spider-Man’s roots supports this shift. He has argued that Spider-Man has always had horror DNA, pointing to the character’s origin as a radioactive spider bite that grants strange abilities . The Midnight Universe simply leans into that darker foundation instead of softening it.

First Issue Release and Creative Team
Midnight Spider-Man #1 arrives on October 7, 2026, written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with art by ScieTronc . The second issue is scheduled for November 18, 2026, and the third for December 16, 2026 . Second printings for all three Midnight launch titles are set for October 28, 2026 .
Johnson has said the first issue plants long-term story threads, with some payoffs planned for the third and fourth years of the series . A multi-year plan is in place for the Midnight line, with at least 24 to 48 issues mapped out for some titles .
Felicia Hardy, known as Black Cat, appears in this universe as an Oscorp employee, adding another twist to Peter’s world . The series promises a version of Peter Parker who is fighting not just villains, but his own transformation.
The motto change does not affect the main Amazing Spider-Man comics or the MCU films. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, is set for release in July 2026 and follows the events of No Way Home, but it operates in a separate continuity from the Midnight Universe . Its taglines focus on Peter’s isolation after the world forgot his identity, with lines like “Even if no one remembers me, I’ll keep protecting” .
