The long-awaited comedy series Brothers, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, finally has a premiere date. Apple TV+ announced that the eight-episode series will debut globally on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, with the first two episodes dropping together. New episodes will then be released every Wednesday until the season finale on November 4, 2026.

This marks the first time the True Detective co-stars have reunited for a live-action TV series since their iconic turn as detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart in 2014. The show has been in development since 2023 and faced several production delays, including a change in showrunners. Now, fans finally have a date to mark on their calendars.
A Metafictional Comedy About Friendship and Family
In Brothers, McConaughey and Harrelson play fictionalized versions of themselves. The series is inspired by real-life rumors that the two actors might actually be related. In 2023, Harrelson confirmed that his father had a brief relationship with McConaughey’s mother, leading to speculation that they could be half-brothers. Harrelson has said, “We haven’t done a test, but there are too many times that I think to myself, My God, the similarities!”.
The show’s official synopsis reads: “After Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he loads up the family and heads to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch. But what begins as a healing getaway quickly spirals when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (played by Holland Taylor), accidentally lets slip a long-buried secret that the two friends might actually be brothers.” As Woody turns the ranch upside down in pursuit of the truth, Matthew finds himself juggling an entirely different identity crisis: a potential run for Governor of Texas.
Cast, Crew and Production Details
The ensemble cast includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, Oona Yaffe, and Holland Taylor. Lee Eisenberg, known for his work on The Office and the Peabody-winning Jury Duty, serves as showrunner and executive producer. He took over after original showrunner David West Read exited the series due to creative differences.
The series is produced by Paramount Television Studios for Apple TV+. Trent O’Donnell directed the pilot and multiple episodes. The show was filmed in Austin, Texas, marking the first episodic sitcom shot in the city.

McConaughey and Harrelson’s Return to TV
Brothers represents a significant return to television for both actors. McConaughey has largely focused on film since True Detective, with roles in projects like The Gentlemen and Sing 2. Harrelson has remained busy with film work as well. Their reunion on this project has been eagerly anticipated by fans.
The show’s metafictional approach, blurring the line between reality and fiction, has drawn comparisons to other celebrity-driven comedies. The first look photo released by Apple TV shows Harrelson with a guitar and McConaughey with a drink, setting a laid-back, comedic tone.
