The new crime drama Nemesis is now streaming on Netflix, bringing a gritty story about a detective who becomes obsessed with catching a master thief. The show comes from Courtney A. Kemp, the creator of Power, and co-creator Tani Marole. The series has 8 episodes and puts the spotlight on two men on opposite sides of the law, plus the families caught in the middle.
The show’s creator Courtney A. Kemp wanted to make sure viewers understand both the hero and the villain. She told Netflix that you don’t have to like what a character does, but you have to understand why they do it. Both choices on the show feel real and unavoidable.
Matthew Law and Y’lan Noel lead the cast as the two men who cannot stop going after each other. But they are not alone. Their wives, children, fathers, and partners all get pulled into the dangerous game.
The Two Men At The Center Of The Story
Matthew Law plays Detective Isaiah Stiles, an LAPD lieutenant in the robbery-homicide division. He sees the world in black and white. Good people and bad people. No gray area. Stiles has a painful past that turned him into someone who is always angry. He wants to be good so badly that he hates anyone he sees as bad. Law is known for his role as O’Shon on Abbott Elementary and has also appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Oval.
Y’lan Noel plays Coltrane Wilder, a businessman who used to be in prison but turned his life around. At least, that is what everyone thinks. In reality, Wilder is still running heists with a skilled crew. He lives in the gray area. He wants to win at any cost and sees Stiles as a worthy opponent. Noel starred in Insecure as Daniel King and played the lead role in the horror film The First Purge.
The co-creator Tani Marole described the two men as two sides of the same coin. Both are obsessive. Both would do anything for their families. But one is so focused on destroying the other that he risks losing everything.
The Stiles Family
Gabrielle Dennis plays Dr. Candace Stiles, Isaiah’s wife and a high-end therapist. She comes from a wealthy family and married Stiles against her parents’ wishes. But now she feels ignored because her husband puts his job first all the time. As Stiles gets more obsessed with catching Wilder, Candace starts to wonder if her life would be better without him. Dennis is known for playing Janay Brice in The Game and appearing in A Black Lady Sketch Show.
Cedric Joe plays Noah Stiles, the son of Isaiah and Candace. He is a smart student and athlete but feels trapped by what his father wants him to be. With Isaiah always busy with work, Noah starts spending time with his grandfather Amos, which creates more problems for the family. Joe appeared in Space Jam: A New Legacy and Women of the Movement.
Moe Irvin plays Amos “Nightmare” Stiles, Isaiah’s father. He is a legend in Los Angeles street gangs but a disgrace to his own family. Amos still feels guilty about the death of Isaiah’s older brother. Even though Isaiah wants nothing to do with him, father and son are more alike than either wants to admit. Irvin is known for playing Nurse Tyler Christian on Grey’s Anatomy and has appeared in 9-1-1 and FBI International.
The Wilder Family
Cleopatra Coleman plays Ebony Wilder, Coltrane’s wife. She runs a luxury real estate business, but she is also involved in her husband’s criminal operations. Ebony starts to question if their dangerous double life is worth the risk. Coleman described her character as someone who is not just one thing. She is powerful, vulnerable, smart, and real all at the same time. Coleman is known for playing Erica Dundee on The Last Man on Earth and appeared in Infinity Pool and Dopesick.
Sophina Brown plays Charlie, Ebony’s half-sister and Wilder’s crime broker. She is the one who brought the couple together and will go to great lengths to protect her sister. Brown said Charlie handles her business first but is also very focused on family. Brown played FBI agent Nikki Betancourt on Numbers and prosecutor Raina Troy on Shark.
Tre Hale plays Darren “Stro” Stroman, a loyal member of Wilder’s team. He is a devoted father and exactly the person you want beside you in a dangerous situation.
