The fifth and final season of Outer Banks arrived on Netflix on August 20, 2026, bringing the adventure of the Pogues to a close. The show, which first premiered in April 2020, quickly became a global sensation. It has now wrapped up its run after five seasons. How the Show Ends for the Pogues
The series finale brings the story full circle. The Pogues end up back on Kildare Island, where the show began. The final season starts with the group still grieving JJ’s death. They are determined to get revenge on Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), who killed their friend. The finale takes place during a hurricane, similar to the first season finale. Kiara (Madison Bailey) has a final fight with Groff. He drowns during the storm. Kiara is saved by her friends. After the storm, the Pogues finally get the Royal Merchant gold.
Jonathan Daviss told Entertainment Weekly:
“It all ended exactly where we thought it would.”
He added that everyone “in some way” gets what they wanted. Daviss also said:
“I think we were all very emotionally charged by that ending.”
John B and Sarah Get Married
The final scene of the show features a one-year time jump. John B and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) finally get married. Their baby boy, named JJ, is present at the ceremony. Chase Stokes told EW that the ending was exactly what was pitched to them at the beginning of the show. He said:
“To actually stick to that, commit to that and then see it all the way through is a really beautiful thing.”
Madelyn Cline said she “already knew” what Sarah’s fate would be. She wished for Sarah and John B to have “air conditioning and a happy marriage and a happy baby”. Stokes joked that he hopes the couple will “stay out of trouble”.
Kiara and Cleo Find Their Happy Endings
Madison Bailey told EW that she never really knew what Kiara’s ending would be. But she is happy with how it turned out. She hopes the fans are at peace with it as well. Carlacia Grant (Cleo) was shocked by her character’s ending. She was happy that Cleo and Pope get to move into Tannyhill. Grant thought it was a good way to bring the story full circle.

A Prequel Series Is in the Works
Even though Outer Banks has ended, the story is not completely over. A prequel series is currently in development. The show’s creators, Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, have said they are not fully ready to say goodbye to the world they created. They confirmed that Season 5 would be the last season because they wanted “to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago”. The final season has already become a huge success. It has topped the Netflix TV charts since its release.
