Hulu’s three-part docuseries Swipe Right on the Devil, which premiered on October 22, 2026, retraces the 2017 disappearance and murder of 24-year-old Sydney Loofe in Nebraska. The series goes far past the headlines of a Tinder date gone wrong. It pulls back the curtain on a small group of young women drawn into a world of manipulation, so-called witchcraft, and a man who called himself a vampire. The Loofe family speaks publicly for the first time, and the filmmakers sit face-to-face with the man convicted of the killing. This is a full breakdown of what the series covers, what happened to Sydney, and where her killers are now.

What Happened Previously Before the Murder

Sydney Loofe worked as a cashier at a Menards hardware store in Lincoln, Nebraska. She matched with a woman using the name “Audrey” on Tinder in November 2017. The two went on a first date on November 14. A second date was set for the evening of November 15. That was the last night anyone saw Sydney alive. When she did not show up for work the next morning, her coworkers called for a wellness check. Officers found her car in the driveway and her purse still inside her apartment. Her family reported her missing.

Sydney Loofe’s Final Days and the Search That Followed

Friends knew Sydney had gone out with someone from Tinder. One friend created a fake Tinder profile to match with “Audrey” and pulled a phone number. That number led investigators to Bailey Boswell, a 23-year-old woman living in Wilber, Nebraska, about 40 miles southwest of Lincoln. Boswell shared a basement apartment with her 51-year-old boyfriend, Aubrey Trail .

Officers moved quickly. Neighbors later told police they smelled an overwhelming amount of bleach coming from the apartment the night Sydney vanished. Boswell and Trail were already gone .

Sydney’s remains were found on December 4, 2017, in garbage bags along country roads in rural Clay County, roughly 60 miles from Lincoln. She had been dismembered into 14 pieces. Her left upper arm was never recovered, and internal organs were missing .

Inside the Coven: What Survivors Told the Filmmakers

Three women in their early twenties testified in court and appear in the docuseries. All met Boswell on Tinder before being introduced to Trail. They described a system of expensive clothes, spa treatments, drugs, and weekly allowances of $150 to $200. The price was group sex with Trail, called “Daddy,” and Boswell, called “Mommy” .

Trail told the women he was a vampire. He claimed he could fly and read minds. He said Boswell was the leader of their coven and that they were all witches. The entry requirement was brutal. Trail told them they would have to torture someone and complete a killing so he could gain more power. He also wanted to film the murder and sell it as a snuff film .

“We dwelled on it for months, so I decided to let her kill Sydney and take her soul.” — Aubrey Trail in Swipe Right on the Devil

Ashley Hills, one of the survivors, said Trail told her he had a coven of 12 witches and that she could become the 13th member if she killed someone and took their soul .

Episode 1: The Search for Sydney

The first chapter stays close to the Loofe family. Interviews with Sydney’s siblings, friends, coworkers, and the local law enforcement officers who led the early search give the hour its weight. The episode covers the frantic first days after Sydney failed to show up for work, the discovery of her car and purse, and the friend’s quick thinking on Tinder that gave police their first real lead .

Episode 2: Another Missing Girl

The second episode moves away from the search and into the couple at the center of it. Trail’s criminal history stretches back decades. He was in and out of prison starting at 17 but had no violent crime convictions before Sydney’s murder . Boswell was a former high school basketball and track athlete from Leon, Iowa, and a single mother. She met Trail through Backpage and left her previous partner for him .

The episode lays out the couple’s fraud schemes. They ran a gold coin scam, defrauded victims of more than $375,000, and transported stolen property across state lines. Boswell used multiple Tinder identities, including Ana Golyakova, Ashley Hills, and Kaitlyn Brandle, to bring women into their world .

Episode 3: Witches Can Be Made

The final chapter follows the arrests, the trials, and the convictions. Trail and Boswell were arrested on unrelated fraud warrants in Branson, Missouri, about two weeks after Sydney disappeared. Trail gave authorities several conflicting accounts. He first described the death as a consensual sexual encounter gone wrong. He later admitted to killing Sydney because he feared she would expose the life he and Boswell were leading .

Trail’s trial in 2019 included a moment that stopped the courtroom. He shouted, “Bailey is innocent, and I curse you all,” and slashed his neck in front of the jury. The injury was not fatal, and the trial continued. The jury convicted him of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder .

Boswell was tried separately in 2020. Her lawyers argued that Trail controlled her and forced her to take part. The jury convicted her of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and improper disposal of human remains. A three-judge panel split on the death penalty. Two voted for death, one did not. The decision had to be unanimous, so Boswell received life in prison without parole, plus another 52 years for her other convictions .

The People at the Center

Sydney Loofe was a 24-year-old Menards cashier from Lincoln. Her family described her as “the crystal-blue-eyed girl with a soft heart.” Her remains were found in December 2017, and her family has since set up the Sydney Loofe Foundation in her honor .

Aubrey Trail, now 60, is on death row at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution. He asked Nebraska to set an execution date in 2023, but it has not been scheduled. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear his case in April 2026 .

Bailey Boswell, now 32, is serving her life sentence at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York. The Nebraska Supreme Court upheld her convictions and sentences in 2024 .

What the Filmmakers Say

Director Brian Biegel spent roughly three years on the project. He visited Trail on death row and sat across from him for a two-hour conversation.

“There was nothing in his eyes. It was just, it was dead in there.” — Brian Biegel on meeting Aubrey Trail

Biegel also spoke with Boswell. He called her “a puzzling person” in later interviews about the series . Executive producer Christopher St. John said the goal was to tell the story from every angle: law enforcement, victims, families, and the perpetrators themselves. He described the core of the series as a group of young women looking for belonging who became vulnerable in a terrible situation.
