Outer Banks Season 5 premiered on Thursday, August 20, 2026, on Netflix. All 10 episodes dropped at once, giving viewers the chance to watch the complete story from start to finish. The final season follows John B (Chase Stokes), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) as they deal with the loss of their friend.

What Happened to JJ Maybank in Outer Banks Season 4

JJ died in the Season 4 finale after being stabbed by Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane). Groff is JJ’s biological father. The killing happened in Morocco after JJ gave Groff the Blue Crown to save Kiara’s life. Groff stabbed JJ and said, “You should have given me the rope,” referring to an earlier moment when JJ did not help Groff escape from a well.

JJ spent his final moments with Kiara. The Pogues buried him in Morocco before the season ended. The showrunners have said that JJ’s death was planned from the beginning of the series.

The Pogues’ Revenge Mission in Season 5

Season 5 finds the Pogues at their breaking point following JJ’s death. They are stranded far from home and mourning the loss of their friend. The group has lost the Blue Crown and faces threats from multiple sides. Chandler Groff is still out there. Dalia and the Corsairs are closing in. The Kooks are making sure the Pogues have no home to return to.

“Their mission is now a desperate race to reclaim their future and finally win the freedom they’ve been chasing since the beginning.” – Official Season 5 synopsis

Kiara takes the lead in seeking revenge. She witnessed JJ’s death and watched him bleed out in her arms. In Season 5, she wants to kill Groff herself and use the Blue Crown’s powers. The Pogues travel to Morocco, Croatia, and other locations to find the Blue Crown and fulfill its prophecy.

The Blue Crown Hunt and Its Powers

The Blue Crown is a legendary artifact that people believe can bring the dead back to life. Kiara holds onto this hope throughout the season. She believes the crown can bring JJ back.

The Pogues track down the crown’s location in Croatia, where dangerous pirates have it. Kiara, John B, Sarah, and Pope create a plan to get it back. They use explosives to cause an avalanche and stop the pirates from reaching the lake where the crown’s powers can be used.

During the confrontation, Kiara steals the crown and goes to the lake to perform the ritual. She prays to the stars and begs for JJ to return. At first, nothing happens. Then a comet-like shooting star appears in the sky, triggering happy flashbacks of Kiara and JJ’s time together.

“Kiara could have had anything in that moment. I think a lot of people will watch that scene and be like, ‘What was that?’ It was enough for her. It was enough.” – Madison Bailey to TheWrap

The crown does not bring JJ back to life in a physical form. Instead, it gives Kiara a moment of closure through memories. Madison Bailey explained that if you have experienced loss, dreaming about that person counts as magic.

Why Outer Banks Is Ending With Season 5

The show’s creators always planned for Outer Banks to run for five seasons. Netflix renewed the series for a fifth season in November 2024 and confirmed it would be the final season. The creators posted a statement on Instagram saying they hoped to “bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned it years ago”.

Shannon Burke told Deadline that the overarching plan was to take the characters on a whole journey. The creators knew early on that one of the kids would die, and that was going to be JJ because he is the most reckless.

What Happens in the Outer Banks Series Finale

The series finale brings the Pogues’ story to a close. Kiara finally gets her revenge against Groff. She tracks him onto a boat during a hurricane and fights him. She manages to hoist him up with a rope and drops him into the ocean, where he drowns.

“Yep, Groff is dead at last. Kie got her revenge against the man who killed her boyfriend.” – Radio Times

The Pogues also recover the Royal Merchant gold worth $400 million. They use the money to help rebuild the island after the hurricane and buy their own piece of paradise.

The show ends with the Pogues back home, free from their enemies, though they are penniless after losing the gold again. But they have each other, and that is what matters most.
