The latest episode of MBC’s hit drama Perfect Crown dropped a bombshell that left viewers stunned. Right when IU and Byeon Woo-seok‘s characters started getting closer for real, news broke out revealing their marriage started as a contract. The secret got exposed during Seong Hui-ju’s speech at the royal academy, and now everyone wants to know who leaked it. The drama has not given a clear answer yet, but fans have strong theories about three possible culprits.
Queen Dowager Yi-rang Tops the Suspect List
The Queen Dowager, played by an unnamed actress in the series, has the strongest reason to hurt I-an (Byeon Woo-seok). She already played a major role in the death of the late king, and she knows that I-an has proof of the king’s final wish to leave the throne to him rather than her own son. This makes her desperate to destroy I-an‘s reputation before he can use that evidence against her.

Yi-rang has already tried to kill I-an once before. In episode 8, viewers learned that the poisoned drink at the wedding was meant for I-an, not Hui-ju. The goblets got switched, which is why Hui-ju collapsed instead. This murder attempt failed, so exposing the contract marriage became her backup plan to ruin him publicly.
She also has a spy named A-reum working inside I-an‘s private residence. This mole has been gathering information since she arrived, making it very easy for Yi-rang to learn about the secret contract and leak it to the media at the perfect moment.
“I-an warned Yi-rang about knowing the truth, and the K-drama also showed that I-an has part of the late king’s edict,” reports Soap Central. “Yi-rang has a big reason to eliminate I-an.”

Lord Ilpyeong Has the Means and Motive
Lord Ilpyeong, Yi-rang’s father, is the second most likely person behind the leak. He already tried to kill Hui-ju in a car crash earlier in the series. When that plan failed, he likely moved on to other methods of destroying the couple. In recent episodes, he looked visibly disappointed when the royal wedding happened successfully.
The drama shows that Ilpyeong might have been the one who poisoned I-an‘s goblet at the wedding. Since his daughter expressed fear about being exposed for her role in the late king’s death, Ilpyeong would do anything to protect her. Leaking the contract marriage creates a scandal that keeps the palace busy with other matters instead of investigating the poisoning or the late king’s death.
Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo Could Be the Unexpected Traitor
The most surprising suspect is Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo (Noh Sang-hyun). He already knows about the contract marriage because Hui-ju told him herself. He has also shown romantic feelings for Hui-ju since their high school days, which gives him a personal reason to break up the marriage.
Jeong-woo has been supportive of the couple on the surface. He helped with the investigation after the poisoning and gave I-an advice about protecting Hui-ju. But some fans think his loyalty might hide jealousy. If he cannot have Hui-ju himself, exposing the contract could push her away from I-an and create a chance for him later.
However, this theory has a hole. Jeong-woo genuinely seemed upset when the news broke. He was present at the royal academy when the story came out, and his reaction did not look like someone who planned the leak.
What Actually Happened in Episode 8
Before the exposure, episode 8 showed Hui-ju recovering at the hospital after being poisoned during the wedding. The doctor confirmed digoxin poisoning, which can cause death if too much is taken. I-an cried when he saw her wake up. The two later realized the poison was meant for him because the wine cups got switched during the ceremony.
The couple spent their first night together in the same bed. I-an held Hui-ju, and she kissed him on the cheek. He kissed her head and smiled. Everything seemed to be going well for the new royal couple.
Later, Hui-ju gave a speech at the royal academy as the new Grand Princess. She talked about her journey from CEO of Castle Beauty to becoming a royal. That is when everyone’s phones started buzzing with breaking news. The article claimed that Seong Hui-ju and Grand Prince I-an signed a contract marriage that would end in divorce after three years.
Reporters rushed toward Hui-ju, who had no idea what was happening. She stood there completely frozen as cameras flashed in her face. I-an grabbed her hand and told her, “Just look at me.” He led her out of the venue while holding her hand, protecting her from the media storm.
