Pokémon TCG has given Mewtwo a striking new look for the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and the redesigned card is already one of the most talked-about releases of the year. The new artwork comes from Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN and introduces a brand-new card rarity called Futuristic Rare. The card arrived as part of the 30th Celebration expansion, which launched worldwide on September 16, 2026, and fans have been sharing mixed but strong opinions about the bold new visual style ever since.

What the New Mewtwo Card Looks Like

The Futuristic Rare Mewtwo ex card shows the Psychic-type Legendary in a cyberpunk-style setting with chrome-like textures and purple and orange color clashes. The art style is a major departure from traditional Pokémon TCG illustrations, leaning into a futuristic, almost sci-fi aesthetic rather than the usual natural or battle-focused scenes. The Mewtwo card (numbered 157/128) and the Mew card (numbered 158/128) are the only two cards in the set that use this new Futuristic Rare rarity.

The Pokémon Company described the design approach in an official statement:

“In 30th Celebration, fans can look forward to discovering an all-new card rarity, Futuristic rare, which will feature new visuals illustrated by the renowned Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN. Each Futuristic rare card will depict Pokémon in striking artwork evocative of hope toward an unknown future.”

YOSHIROTTEN also shared thoughts on the project in a video interview published on the official Pokémon website. The artist explained how the expansion aims to honor 30 years of history while pushing the Pokémon TCG toward something new.

Card Stats and Gameplay Details

The Mewtwo ex card comes with 230 HP and two attacks. Photon Bullets deals 50 damage to all of the opponent’s Pokémon ex cards, while Psychic Powers hits for 230 damage but prevents Mewtwo ex from attacking on the following turn. The card is a Psychic-type and was illustrated by 5ban Graphics for the standard ex version, with YOSHIROTTEN handling the Futuristic Rare variant.

Pull rates for the Futuristic Rare cards are estimated at around 1 in 120 packs, making them roughly 1.5 times rarer than the usual Special Illustration Rares. The Pokémon Company does not publish official pull rate figures, but community pack-opening data has provided these estimates.

Why the Design Has Divided Fans

Early reactions to the Futuristic Rare cards were mixed. Some fans called the new look “ugly” when the first images appeared, while others have warmed up to the unique aesthetic over time. One fan on the Elite Fourum community wrote:

“I thought the Mewtwo and Mew were ugly at first, but the more I look at them, the more they’re growing on me. They kind of have that ‘what we thought looked like futuristic 30 years ago’ vibe, which is fitting in a way.”

A writer for Wargamer shared a similar shift in perspective: “It’s not that I hate the look of these special rarity cards. In fact, I actually rather like the Mewtwo. The clash of the orange and purple alongside the purple text looks pretty neat.”

Polygon noted that the Mewtwo card’s rings “might seem boring at first glance” but that “in motion” the design takes on a much more dynamic quality. The publication also pointed out that the chromatic finish on the rarest cards initially “flattened the grandeur” of Pokémon like Mew and Mewtwo, though many fans have since given the cards a second chance after seeing them in person.

How to Get the Futuristic Rare Mewtwo Card

The Mewtwo ex Futuristic Rare card is available in 30th Celebration booster packs, which launched on September 16, 2026, at participating retailers worldwide. Each booster pack contains five foil cards and one foil Basic Energy card, with every card in the set being a foil. The set includes over 128 cards, with 30 unique Pikachu illustrations to collect.

A separate Mewtwo promo card was also given away at participating retailers. Starting October 2, 2026, customers who spent $15 or more on Pokémon TCG products at stores like GameStop and Best Buy received the promo card as a gift with purchase.

For digital players, a different Team Rocket’s Mewtwo card arrived in Pokémon TCG Pocket on August 26, 2026, as part of the Team Rocket’s Ambition booster pack. That version of Mewtwo features a dark Team Rocket-themed design and has 100 HP with an attack called Psychic Explosion that deals 130 damage but also does 70 damage to itself.
