Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is heading back to the crime genre with a new project titled ‘Police Company’ . The film, backed by T-Series , will feature actor Harshvardhan Rane in the lead role as former Mumbai encounter specialist Daya Nayak. The Story Behind ‘Police Company’

The film is set against the backdrop of Mumbai’s gang wars during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Varma explained that the story begins with Dawood Ibrahim eliminating rival gangs and building his operations into what became known as D Company before leaving for Dubai. He left his protégé Chhota Rajan to handle D Company’s operations.

A subsequent split between Dawood and Chhota Rajan created a power vacuum in Mumbai’s underworld. Varma wrote on X: “Subsequently, a chain of events led to a split between Dawood and Rajan, which in turn caused a vacuum in the Mumbai underworld. Taking advantage of the situations, many other gangs jumped in to stake their claim for the top spot, creating a massive outburst of criminal activities”.

The system was failing to control the rising gang activities, which attracted young men from places like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar to join underworld companies. In response, the Mumbai Police formed a special squad. According to Varma, this squad killed more than 300 gangsters between 1997 and 2004.

The Tagline: ‘More Dangerous Than D Company’

Varma revealed the film’s tagline: “It Is More Dangerous Than D Company” . Explaining the title’s meaning, he wrote: “The police is an institution, and an underworld company is a money-making organisation.. But when an institution is given extra powers, it will soon become a company”.

Harshvardhan Rane to Portray Daya Nayak

Harshvardhan Rane will play Daya Nayak, a key member of the special police squad. Varma confirmed the casting on social media: “POLICE COMPANY is the story inspired by that SQUAD based on one of its team members DAYA NAYAK which is being played by HARSH VARDHAN RANE”.

The film will explore Nayak’s journey from his early life in a village in Mangalore to becoming one of Mumbai’s most well-known encounter specialists. His career spanned around three decades and included several high-profile operations against members of the city’s underworld.

Nayak’s life has previously inspired several Indian films. Varma produced Nana Patekar ‘s ‘Ab Tak Chhappan‘ in 2004, which drew from aspects of the police officer’s career. His story also inspired N. Chandra’s ‘Kagaar‘, the Kannada film ‘Encounter Daya Nayak‘ and the Telugu movie ‘Golimaar‘. However, ‘Police Company’ is reportedly being developed as a more detailed biographical account.

Ensemble Cast and Production Details

According to reports, Fardeen Khan has been cast to play one of Nayak’s colleagues and a key member of the specialised police squad. Soundarya Sharma will play the female lead opposite Rane. Varma has also brought together three actors from his 1998 classic ‘Satya‘—Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla and Makarand Deshpande—for important supporting roles.

The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar ‘s T-Series in association with RGV Company Production. This marks the first official collaboration between Bhushan Kumar and Ram Gopal Varma. The project is jointly produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar and Ram Gopal Varma.

First Look and Shooting Schedule

Varma shared the first look of Harshvardhan Rane as Daya Nayak on social media. The film is scheduled to go on floors on August 17, 2026, in Mumbai. Production is expected to wrap by December, with a theatrical release planned for next year.

The project is said to be particularly close to Varma, who has reportedly wanted to bring Nayak’s complete story to the screen for several years. The film gained fresh momentum after T-Series came on board and Rane was attached to headline the project.

With ‘Police Company’, Varma returns to the crime and underworld genre that has been a major part of his filmmaking career, following films like ‘Satya‘ (1998), ‘Company‘ (2002) and ‘Sarkar‘ (2005). While the title recalls his earlier works, ‘Police Company’ will reportedly tell a standalone story and will not share a narrative connection with ‘Company’ or ‘D Company’.
