One of the biggest talking points is Yash playing two characters: Raya and his son Ticket (also called Rumi). The criticism of Toxic is not new. The film’s first teaser, released on January 8, 2026 (Yash’s birthday), already faced backlash. That video opened with Yash in an intimate scene with a woman inside a car before cutting to him shooting several men at a cemetery.
The teaser received complaints from a Christian body and a state women’s commission. An FIR was even filed against the makers. Some viewers called it “indecent” and “the most vulgar teaser of the decade”.
A separate teaser called Ladies & Ladies, released in July, also faced criticism. Despite being marketed as a teaser dedicated to women, it showed female characters mainly through Yash’s perspective. One social media user wrote: “Toxic New teaser dedicated to women, yet most of them are introduced through objectification rather than character”.
Several filmmakers, including Anurag Kashyap and Ram Gopal Varma, defended the first-look video. However, the criticism around the film’s treatment of women has continued to grow.
Yash Defends Film as More Than Just a Gangster Drama
Despite the criticism, Yash has described Toxic as a layered film that goes beyond typical action movies. In an interview, he said the movie “explores deep psychological themes and aspects of human behaviour that audiences can relate to”.
“At face value, it may seem like a typical gangster drama packed with action, but it’s far more layered. It’s a unique way of presenting a dark character.”
The actor also revealed that the film was shot simultaneously in Kannada and English. It will be released in dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and several other languages. This multilingual approach shows the makers’ plans for a wide release across India and beyond.
Yash compared Toxic to Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, calling it an original intellectual property at a time when franchises dominate the industry.
Release Date and Production Details
Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has faced multiple delays. It was first scheduled for release on March 19, 2026, but was pushed back due to “uncertainty in the Middle East”. The release was then moved to June, before being delayed again. The makers finally announced on Father’s Day that the film would arrive in theatres on August 26, 2026.
The film is produced by Venkat K. Narayana under KVN Productions, along with Yash’s own banner, Monster Mind Creations. Principal photography took place from August 2024 to October 2025 across multiple locations, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Goa, Thoothukudi, and Jaipur.
The technical team includes National Award-winning cinematographer Rajeev Ravi, composer Ravi Basrur, editor Ujwal Kulkarni, and production designer TP Abid. Two songs from the film, Tabaahi and Manamohaka, have already been released.
