Robert Downey Jr. has officially ended the fan debate. The actor, who is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, confirmed that his new character is more powerful than the Mad Titan Thanos. He made this surprise statement during a special screening of Avengers: Infinity War at SXSW 2026 in London.
The actor appeared on stage with directors Joe and Anthony Russo. When Joe Russo asked who would win in a fight between Thanos and Doom, Downey Jr. did not hesitate. “Doctor Doom,” he replied before joking about his microphone. This moment marked the first time the actor has directly compared the two villains since his casting was announced in July 2024.
Marvel Is ‘Zeroing Out the Board’ for Doomsday
Downey Jr. explained that the team is not trying to create a bigger version of Infinity War or Endgame. Instead of copying the past, they are starting fresh. He admitted that those movies were giants that they cannot stand on the shoulders of.
โWe can’t beat it, we can’t stand on the shoulders of these giants of Infinity War and Endgame,โ Downey Jr. said. โSo we’re literally zeroing out the board, and we’re gonna try to earn your trust and respect all over again, and with the likes of these fellows, I think we got a pretty good shot.โ This approach confirms that Avengers: Doomsday will not rely on nostalgia for Iron Man but will build a new story for the Multiverse Saga.
Why Doctor Doom Is a Bigger Threat Than Thanos
While Thanos relied on physical strength and the Infinity Stones, Doctor Victor Von Doom brings a different kind of danger. Doom is a master of both advanced science and dark magic. In the original Marvel comics, he has outsmarted gods and stolen cosmic powers.
Fans have pointed out that Thanos is physically strong, but Doom is psychologically terrifying. He is a genius inventor and a powerful sorcerer. This combination makes him unpredictable. Unlike Thanos, who wanted to balance the universe, Doom wants total control. He believes he is the only one worthy of ruling everything. This ego and intelligence make him a more personal and dangerous enemy for the new team of Avengers.
