The creator of American Horror Story has dropped a major detail about the upcoming 13th season. Ryan Murphy revealed that Evan Peters will have a scene where he plays two different characters at the same time, having a conversation with himself.
Murphy shared this information during an interview with Variety while discussing the new season. The scene is part of a season that brings back characters from multiple previous seasons in what Murphy calls an “Avengers” style crossover.
“Some of the actors will be playing two characters from two different seasons in the same scene. Evan was, at one point, playing two different characters and talking to himself. So it was really fun and tricky to make, and I loved that.”
Evan Peters Plays Two Iconic Characters in One Scene
The two characters Peters will portray in this particular scene are Tate Langdon (along with Rubber Man) from Murder House and Kai Anderson from Cult. Both characters are fan favourites from their respective seasons.
Murphy admitted he was initially worried about how this would work. He told Vogue that Peters had to have a conversation with himself while playing both roles.
“The person who I think had the hardest time was Evan, because in one scene he had to play Tate/Rubber Man and Kai. So he had to have a conversation with himself. And I thought it was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be trouble.’ But Evan is such a pro that I think it only took two takes.”
The creator also mentioned that he has edited almost all of these scenes himself and thinks they turned out really good.
Season 13 Brings Back Characters from Fan-Favourite Seasons
Ryan Murphy explained that he knows which seasons the fans love the most. He specifically mentioned Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, and Cult as the ones audiences enjoy.
“I know which ones the fans liked the most. They love ‘Murder House’, ‘Asylum,’ ‘Coven,’ ‘Freak Show,’ and they loved ‘Cult.’”
The new season is not just a continuation of one particular storyline. Murphy clarified that it combines elements from all the previous seasons.
The Avengers of Horror
Murphy has described the 13th season as an Avengers style team-up. All the characters come together to defeat a greater evil.
“Evan Peters is playing five characters… It is like the Avengers. They all come together to defeat the ultimate evil.”
Jessica Lange is returning to play all four of her iconic characters from previous seasons. Sarah Paulson will play six or seven of her former roles.

Other returning faces include Mena Suvari as Elizabeth Short, Jamie Brewer as Nan, and Frances Conroy. Newcomers joining the cast include John Waters, Avantika, Alex Consani, Joey Pollari, and Madelaine Petsch.
Ariana Grande was initially announced as part of the cast but had to leave the project because of scheduling conflicts with her Eternal Sunshine tour.
Release Date and Episode Details
American Horror Story: 13 will premiere on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The season will air on FX and stream on Hulu in the United States. International viewers can watch it on Disney+ in the UK and other regions.
The season will consist of 13 half-hour episodes. The premiere night and the following week will each feature three episodes. After that, two episodes will release every Thursday, with the final episode arriving on October 29.

Murphy spent many months and years writing this season. He wanted to do something special for the 13th instalment. The season marks Jessica Lange’s first full return to the series since 2014, though she made a guest appearance in 2018’s Apocalypse.
