Rebecca Ferguson herself helped create the design because she wanted something unique that did not look like common tribal tattoos. During a behind-the-scenes video from Season 1, Ferguson explained how the design came together:
“I saw some rope in a tattoo. Lou had found a very similar one, and we thought, oh looks a bit like wool, torn up.”
The reference to wool is a clever nod to the first book in Hugh Howey’s Silo series, which is titled Wool.
Why the Design Had to Look Unnatural
Louise Coles, the hair and makeup designer for the show, shared important details about how the tattoo was created. She explained that the design had to look synthetic and unnatural. The reason for this is simple: the people inside the silo have no knowledge of the natural world. They have never seen trees, flowers, or animals. Everything they know is man-made and artificial.
Coles stated:
“There can’t be any shapes that are natural because they don’t know they exist.”
This small detail makes the tattoo feel authentic to the world of the show. The lower levels are the only places where people truly have artistic freedom, which is why the tattoo design team focused on creating something that felt organic to that specific environment.
A Symbol That Even Juliette Cannot Remember
The third season takes a bold turn by giving Juliette amnesia. This storyline does not exist in Hugh Howey’s original books. The show’s creators made this change to add more drama and mystery to the character.
Juliette became mayor of Silo 18 after returning from the outside world. But her memory loss was not an accident. The Algorithm, the mysterious voice controlling the silo, has been using a chemical called D+ to suppress her memories. Camille Sims has been giving her these drugs regularly and even increasing the doses under orders from the Algorithm. False memories have been implanted to make Juliette forget what really happened.

Behind the Scenes: The Challenge of Keeping the Tattoo Consistent
Creating Juliette’s tattoo was not easy. Louise Coles revealed that one of the biggest production challenges was keeping the tattoo looking the same in every scene. This was especially difficult during underwater scenes.
Every time Rebecca Ferguson came out of the water tank, the tattoos had to be reapplied. The wigs also had to be reset. This required close collaboration between the makeup, costume, and directing departments.
Despite these challenges, the team made sure the tattoos looked natural and organic in every single shot. The attention to detail shows how important this small piece of the character’s look really is.
