Singer Sonu Nigam turned an operating table into a performance stage. The 53-year-old singer shared a video of himself singing Mohammed Rafi’s classic song “Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki” while doctors performed surgery on him. The unexpected moment happened at a hospital where Nigam was undergoing a procedure on his left ring finger. The video quickly spread across social media, with fans and fellow singers sending their wishes for his recovery.
Surgery Related to Recurring Growth on Finger
Sonu Nigam opened up about the reason behind his surgery in an exclusive conversation. He said the procedure was related to a growth on his left ring finger that keeps coming back. “It’s been happening for some time. I had a surgery four months back to remove it, but it has come back again. I think it’s got to do with some arthritis condition that I have in my bones, probably,” he shared.
With the growth returning for a second time, Nigam said there is no fixed treatment plan yet. “We have to wait and watch. It’s come out the second time,” he added.
The singer, however, made it clear that he has no plans to take a break from work. “I’m not on a break at all. In fact, somebody has organised a birthday party for me. And, of course, I was singing yesterday also. After the surgery, day before yesterday, I went for the launch of my song Chunni. So yes, I’ve been on the move right now, even after the surgery,” he said.
How the Operating Room Performance Happened
The singing during surgery was not planned. Nigam explained that his doctor, Dr Nilesh Sathbhai, is a fan of his work and was playing his songs during the procedure. The songs came from “Rafi Resurrected,” his album with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, where he recreated Mohammed Rafi’s legendary tracks.
“As the surgery was happening, between some songs, there were a couple of songs that came without the voice. And as it came without the voice, the song was playing, but there was no voice. So, organically, I started singing,” he recalled.
The moment became special for everyone in the operating room. “They really enjoyed it. And they actually said that this has never happened, that a patient is singing for the doctors while they do surgery. And I also enjoyed it because these are songs that are so close to my heart,” said Nigam.
He revealed that he sang two to three songs for the doctors. It was Nigam himself who suggested they record the moment. “So I sang a couple of songs. This is just one song. I sang about two, three songs for them. So it became a very endearing moment. All the doctors were really happy. And I also asked them if they wanted to record it, they could record it as a memory. So they recorded it and then sent it to me. And that’s when we posted it,” he said.

On Sunday, Nigam shared the video on Instagram with a caption: “An impromptu performance for dear @drnileshsatbhai and his loving team during my surgery. Singing in the pain.. the Joy of Music!”
The clip left fans both surprised and worried. Many took to the comments section to send their prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery. One fan wrote, “Get well soon Sonu sir,” while another commented, “Praying to universe for your speedy recovery”. Another admirer said, “Even in pain you keep singing… truly an inspiration! May Maa Saraswati always stand beside you and bless you with a speedy recovery”.
Fellow singers also reached out. Shreya Ghoshal commented, “Please get well soon Sonu ji! Speedy recovery to you. Your dedication to music and perfection even in such a state, is truly awe-inspiring!”. Vishal Mishra wrote, “That’s why you are my God, get well soon bhaiya.” Ranveer Allahbadia also sent his wishes, saying, “Get well soon Sonu sir! All the love.”
Previous Health Issues
While Nigam did not reveal the exact reason for his latest surgery, he had spoken about a health problem earlier. In June, he shared that he was dealing with a painful nerve-related condition. He had said his nerves were pinched and that he had undergone several MRI and CT scans. He also mentioned that physiotherapy was painful and that he was taking painkillers.
About ‘Rafi Resurrected’ Album
The songs playing during Nigam’s surgery came from his album “Rafi Resurrected,” released in 2008. The double album features 75 members of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and includes 18 popular Rafi tracks. The project was a tribute to Mohammed Rafi, one of India’s most respected playback singers.

Despite his health setback, Nigam continues to release new music. On August 7, he launched his first Hindi-Haryanvi song titled “Chunni”. The track is a romantic, folk-flavoured song featuring popular Haryanvi singer Renuka Panwar. The song is available on all major streaming platforms.
