The latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 has delivered one of the most unexpected returns in the series so far. Sybok, Spock’s half-brother, made his first full appearance in the show during Episode 7, titled “Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass.” However, the return comes with a major twist that has left fans talking.
The episode premiered on Paramount+ on September 3, 2026. It was written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff and directed by Anna Dokoza.
Sybok Appears in Strange New Worlds Season 4 Episode 7
The episode places the crew of the USS Enterprise in a soap opera setting. The reality-warping trickster Trelane, played by Rhys Darby, is behind the genre change. Captain Pike wakes up in sickbay with amnesia, and the crew behaves in overly dramatic ways.
The main storyline involves Spock being near death after an accident. The crew believes they need a heart transplant for him. The only possible donor is his brother Sybok, who is locked away in a prison.
La’an Noonien-Singh, played by Christina Chong, travels to retrieve Sybok. She brings him back to the Enterprise as a prisoner. When she removes the hood from his head, he is revealed to look exactly like Spock.
Ethan Peck Plays Both Spock and Sybok
Ethan Peck, who plays Spock in the series, also takes on the role of Sybok in this episode. This decision was something fans had theorized about before the episode aired.
Peck plays Sybok as an over-the-top soap opera villain. He wears a long wig and an open shirt, matching the dramatic style of the episode. The character is presented as Spock’s evil twin, which fits the soap opera theme.
The Sybok Twist Explained
The Sybok seen in this episode is not the real Sybok from Star Trek canon. The character was originally created for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in 1989, played by Laurence Luckinbill. In that film, Sybok was Spock’s older half-brother.
In Strange New Worlds Season 4, Episode 7, the Sybok character is a creation of Trelane’s reality-warping. The real Sybok was first teased in Season 1, Episode 7, “The Serene Squall.” In that episode, Spock tried to free his half-brother from rehabilitation. Viewers only saw the back of Sybok’s head.
At the end of the Season 4 episode, Spock confirms that he and Sybok are not identical twins. The soap opera version of Sybok was a contrived creation by Trelane.
What Happens Between La’an and Sybok
On the shuttle ride back to the Enterprise, La’an and Sybok play kal-toh, a Vulcan game of logic. The game was first seen in Star Trek: Voyager and is often played by the Vulcan character Tuvok.
La’an and Sybok make a deal. If she wins the game, he will give his heart to Spock. La’an wins by whispering the move into his ear.
Sybok then pulls a phaser on La’an. He offers to escape with her instead of helping Spock. La’an refuses and defends Spock. Sybok becomes irritated, realizing that everyone loves Spock.
He tries to change the course of the shuttle, but La’an stops him. Sybok insists that Spock is not the only one who can be good.

Fan Reaction to Sybok’s Return
The return of Sybok has generated discussion among Star Trek fans. The character had not been seen in full since the 1989 film. His brief tease in Season 1 left viewers waiting for a proper appearance.
Some fans have noted that the real Sybok has still not fully appeared in Strange New Worlds. The version seen in Episode 7 was a product of Trelane’s reality manipulation. It remains possible that the real Sybok could appear before the series ends.
