The wait for the next chapter of Darth Maul’s animated story now has a clear timeline. Matt Michnovetz, the head writer and executive producer of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, confirmed at the D23 Expo that Season 2 will arrive in 2027. The announcement came during a panel for the series, where Michnovetz told the audience to “Get ready for it.”

The show, which comes from Lucasfilm Animation, already received a Season 2 renewal before its first season even started. Dave Filoni, the creator and executive producer, announced the renewal on April 2, 2026, just four days before the series premiere on Disney+. This early green light allowed the creative team to begin work on the next batch of episodes well in advance.

2027 Release Window Confirmed at D23 Panel

The D23 panel for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord gave fans the first official word on when they can expect Season 2. Matt Michnovetz kept his announcement short but clear. He told the crowd that the new season would drop in 2027 and simply said, “Get ready for it.”

The panel took place during the D23 Expo, where Disney and Lucasfilm showcased their upcoming projects. ScreenRant’s Kevin Erdmann was in attendance and reported the news directly from the event. The confirmation puts an end to earlier speculation about whether the show would return in 2026 or later.

Before this official word, Sam Witwer, who voices Maul, had already teased that fans would not have to wait too long. In an interview with The Direct, Witwer mentioned that the team had been working on Season 2 for a while. He said:

“I know when it’s coming out, but it’s not a situation where the audiences will have to wait too, too long. But I think I am forbidden from saying what I know, but we are working on it. We’ve been working on it for a while, and it’s interesting.”

Witwer also noted that the show follows the “usual development cycle” for animated Star Wars series. Given that pattern, many expect Season 2 to land around May or June 2027.

Star Wars Celebrates 50th Anniversary in 2027

The 2027 release window makes sense for a bigger reason. 2027 marks the 50th anniversary of Star Wars. The original film came out on May 25, 1977. Lucasfilm has packed the early months of 2027 with major releases to celebrate this milestone.

Ahsoka Season 2 will premiere on January 20, 2027. The original Star Wars movie will return to theaters for a limited time on February 19. A new Luke and Leia novel called Twin Crossroads by Beth Revis arrives on April 6. Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy‘s new movie Starfighter launches on May 28.

With that schedule, a second-half release for Maul – Shadow Lord makes sense. Disney can keep the anniversary momentum going by spreading out its biggest titles throughout the year. The first half of 2027 already looks crowded, so placing the animated series later in the year helps avoid competition with other major Star Wars projects.

What Happened in Season 1

Season 1 of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord followed Maul during the early days of the Galactic Empire. The former Sith Lord worked to rebuild his criminal network while planning revenge against Darth Sidious.

The show featured a strong cast. Sam Witwer returned as the voice of Maul, a role he has played for years across various animated projects. Gideon Adlon voiced Devon Izara, a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who becomes Maul’s apprentice. Wagner Moura played Brander Lawson, while Richard Ayoade voiced Two-Boots. Other cast members included Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-Dio Daki, Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario, and Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson.

The season finale saw Maul escape from Janix with help from Dryden Vos, voiced by Scott Whyte. In return, Maul agreed to help Vos take control of Crimson Dawn. The season also introduced Darth Vader, who confronted Maul and killed Master Daki.

Season 1 ran for ten episodes, released two at a time starting on April 6, 2026. The final episodes aired on May 4, 2026, also known as Star Wars Day.

What Season 2 Could Explore

Season 2 will likely show Maul’s rise within Crimson Dawn. In canon, Maul eventually leads the syndicate with Dryden Vos as his right hand. The show will probably cover those early steps or move closer to that outcome.

Several characters survived Season 1 and are expected to return. Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon) agreed to let Maul train her, but she does not know that he allowed Darth Vader to kill Master Daki. If she learns the truth, her path toward the dark side could speed up. Looti Vario (Chris Diamantopoulos) remains one of Maul’s few surviving allies and will likely continue serving out of fear rather than loyalty.

Two-Boots (Richard Ayoade) and Rylee Lawson (Charlie Bushnell) also survived and could return. Inquisitors like The Eleventh Brother (Clancy Brown) and Marrok (A.J. LoCascio) might also appear. The show could also bring back characters from Maul’s past, such as Savage Opress and Obi-Wan Kenobi, through flashbacks or other means.

Charlie Bushnell, who plays Rylee Lawson, mentioned that the cast has already started working on Season 2. He said the team has been “working on season 2 a bit” and expressed interest in his character’s growth after losing his father.

Disney+ and Lucasfilm’s Confidence in the Series

Disney showed strong confidence in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord by renewing it for Season 2 before Season 1 even premiered. This move is rare for Disney+ Star Wars series, as many shows have faced uncertain futures.

The show has performed well with audiences. It became the most popular series on Disney Plus after its release and holds a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Some have called it the highest-scored Star Wars project ever, even surpassing classics like The Empire Strikes Back and The Clone Wars.

The early renewal allowed Lucasfilm Animation to start production on Season 2 right away. This could shorten the wait between seasons compared to other animated shows. For comparison, The Bad Batch had about 1 year and 8 months between its first and second seasons. But Maul: Shadow Lord has a more detailed animation style, which might affect production time.

What Fans Can Expect Next

With the 2027 release window now official, fans know when to mark their calendars. The exact date within 2027 has not been announced yet. Disney has not confirmed whether Season 2 will follow the same two-episode weekly release format as Season 1.

The show’s place in the larger Star Wars timeline continues to intrigue viewers. Set during the early Imperial era, it fills in gaps in Maul’s story between his appearances in The Clone Wars and Rebels. The series also connects to other parts of the Star Wars universe, including the criminal underworld and the Inquisitorius.

As 2027 approaches, more details about Season 2 will likely emerge. For now, the creative team, led by Dave Filoni and Matt Michnovetz, continues working on the next chapter of Maul’s journey. The show’s executive producers also include Athena Yvette Portillo, Brad Rau, Carrie Beck, and Josh Rimes.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1 is currently available to stream on Disney+. The series offers ten episodes that follow Maul’s quest for power and revenge in a galaxy under Imperial rule.
