The Tamil film industry is facing a major shutdown starting September 1, 2026. Two leading producers’ bodies have announced that no new Tamil films will release in theatres from that date. The decision also halts all shooting and post-production work across the industry.
The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association jointly made this announcement on Saturday, August 22. The move comes after theatre owners and distributors made a demand that producers say was forced on them without any discussion.
The OTT Window Dispute That Sparked the Shutdown
The core of this disagreement is about when Tamil films can move from theatres to streaming platforms. The Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Distributors Association decided that they would only screen new films if producers gave a written promise to keep movies in theatres for at least eight weeks before releasing them on OTT platforms. They also decided to stop giving advance payments for new films.
Currently, Tamil films typically move to OTT platforms after a four-week theatrical window. The theatre owners and distributors want to double this window to eight weeks. The producers say this decision was made without consulting them or any other industry associations.
The producers’ bodies pointed out that similar rules do not exist in neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, or Kerala. They called this move unacceptable and said it was being forced only in Tamil Nadu.
Producers Refuse to Accept Unilateral Decisions
The TFPC made its position very clear in an official statement. The council said it cannot accept decisions made by the Distributors Association and Theatre Owners Association without consulting producers.
“When the Distributors Association and the Theatre Owners Association take a decision about the producers without consulting them, we cannot accept it.”
The producers also highlighted the financial challenges they already face. Around 250 Tamil films are released every year. Many producers struggle to complete and release their films. Even films that cost hundreds of crores depend heavily on payments from distributors. The producers said that if they do not receive advance payments from distributors, which has been the practice for years, it will become very difficult to finish and release films on time.
Four Major Films Facing Release Uncertainty
The first two weeks of September had four Tamil films scheduled for release. These movies now face an uncertain future because of the shutdown.
Sardar 2, starring Karthi and directed by PS Mithran, was set to hit theatres on September 10. This is one of the most expected films of the year and its release is now in doubt.
Other films that were scheduled for release in the first half of September include Immortal, starring G.V. Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar. Mandaadi, featuring Soori and Suhas, was also on the calendar. Demonte Colony 3, starring Arulnithi and Priya Bhavani Shankar, is another film that could be affected.
The shutdown could also affect big releases planned for later in 2026, including Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, Dhanush’s Om, Vijay Sethupathi’s Bathha, and Jason Sanjay’s Sigma. These films now face an uncertain theatrical landscape.
Shooting and Post-Production to Stop Completely
The producers’ decision goes beyond just stopping new releases. From September 1, all shooting and post-production work on Tamil films will also be halted. This means that films currently in production will have to stop working.
The producers’ bodies said this decision was necessary to protest the unilateral announcement made by the theatre owners and distributors. The move affects not just producers but thousands of workers who depend on the Tamil film industry for their livelihood.
The producers have appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to step in and resolve the dispute. They have asked Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and concerned ministers to intervene. The producers said a solution is needed to address the disagreement between producers, distributors, and theatre owners.

On the other side, theatre owners have indicated that they are willing to sit down with producers and discuss the issue. S Sridhar, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association, spoke to IANS and expressed hope that the issue would be resolved through talks.
“There are a number of films slotted for release in the coming weeks from September. We will all get together, hold talks and look to find a solution to the issue.”
The dispute comes shortly after Vijay, following his appointment as Chief Minister, announced that theatres across Tamil Nadu would conduct five shows for new Tamil films, starting at 9 AM. That decision was welcomed by audiences in the state. Now, the industry faces a different kind of challenge that could stop new films from reaching theatres altogether.
What This Means for Movie Lovers
For audiences who enjoy Tamil cinema, this means there will be no new Tamil films in theatres starting September 1. The shutdown could continue until the dispute between producers, distributors, and theatre owners is resolved.

The joint statement was issued on behalf of the TFPC by Vice President S Kamalakkannan and Secretaries S Kathiresan and R Radhakrishnan. The ball is now in the court of the Tamil Nadu government and the theatre owners to find a way forward.
