Prime Video released the first official teaser for The Chosen Season 6 on July 27, giving viewers a raw look at Jesus of Nazareth’s final hours. The trailer shows Jonathan Roumie’s Jesus wearing a crown of thorns and carrying the cross toward Golgotha. But the season is doing something more than just showing the crucifixion. Creator Dallas Jenkins wants to answer one big question: why did this have to happen?
The show, which has gathered over 300 million viewers worldwide, is now entering its most difficult chapter. Season 6 covers the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life, from his arrest to his death on the cross. Jenkins has described it as “the most important and biggest and heaviest season we’ve ever done”.
Flashbacks as a Tool to Explain the Crucifixion
The Chosen has always focused on the human side of biblical characters. Season 6 continues that approach by using flashbacks to show why Jesus’ death was necessary. These aren’t just random memories. They are meant to deepen the emotional and spiritual weight of what is about to happen.
The series could pull from Old Testament stories that show humanity’s brokenness. Stories like Cain killing Abel or David taking Bathsheba highlight the sin that made the crucifixion necessary. By showing these flashbacks, the season helps viewers understand that Jesus’ sacrifice was not random. It was the answer to a problem that had existed for thousands of years.
Jenkins has said that Season 6 is about surrender. “Jesus, God incarnate, expressed that His own will might be to avoid the crucifixion, yet He willingly chose surrender,” he told The Christian Post. “If He was willing to put Himself through that when He could have gotten out of it, then our problems are much smaller by comparison.”
The ‘Why’ Behind the Crucifixion
The official logline for Season 6 reads: “The hour has come. Before the sun sets, Jesus of Nazareth will be dead. The season captures the historic events of Jesus’ final day through the lives of those who love Him and those who condemn Him”.
Jenkins has been clear about his goal. “Everyone knows the basics of this part of the story, but not everyone knows the ‘why’ of the crucifixion and the extraordinary events of these 24 hours,” he said in a statement. “We realized this not only deserved a season of television but a standalone full-length theatrical event as well.”
The flashbacks are expected to show how God had been working throughout history. The series might include scenes that show how God created institutions like the family of Abraham, only to see humanity corrupt them. These moments would make the crucifixion feel less like a tragedy and more like a necessary rescue mission.
Release Dates and Viewing Schedule
The Chosen Season 6 premieres on November 15, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video. The season has six episodes. The first three drop on November 15, with new episodes arriving weekly.

The season finale is not part of the streaming release. It will hit theaters as a feature film on March 12, 2027. Jenkins explained that the story was too big for just television. “We wrote and filmed all of it with this in mind,” he said.
The season will be available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sub-Saharan Africa, the UK, and Latin America. For the first time, all episodes and the finale will release in dozens of languages at the same time.

Production on Season 6 began in mid-April and wrapped in mid-September 2025. The cast spent three weeks filming the crucifixion scenes in Matera, Italy, the same location used for Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Jenkins called those three weeks “the most challenging and difficult we had in filming”.
Parts of the season were also filmed in Utah at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Motion Picture Studios. The show returned to North Texas after filming in Utah to continue production.

A Season About Surrender
Jenkins has said Season 6 is about surrender. “We’re watching Jesus ultimately surrender to something that was extraordinarily painful,” he told the Deseret News. “The disciples confused, broken, wondering, having to surrender.”
Abe Bueno-Jallad, who plays Big James, described the season as intense. “There’s not a casual conversation in any scene,” he said. “Everything is going. The wheels are turning. People are trying to stop things from happening — and they’re not able to.”
The teaser trailer shows Jesus meeting his mother Mary as he carries the cross. It ends with Jesus shouting, “Father, forgive them”. These moments are meant to show the humanity of Jesus even in his final hours.
The Chosen was originally a crowdfunded project. It has grown into a global phenomenon with a dedicated fan base. The series is planned for seven seasons total. Season 7 will cover the resurrection.
