David Robert Mitchell’s new sci-fi movie The End of Oak Street hit theaters on August 14, 2026. The film brings together dinosaurs, time travel, and suburban family drama in a way that has audiences talking. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead the cast as parents fighting to keep their children alive after their entire neighborhood gets thrown back to the age of dinosaurs.

The Platt Family Gets Sent Back to the Jurassic Period
The story follows the Platt family living on Oak Street in 1982. Greg Platt (Ewan McGregor) works delivering pizzas while his wife Denise (Anne Hathaway) deals with her own struggles. They have two children: Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery).
Strange things start happening in their neighborhood. Mysterious lights appear at night. Unexplained objects show up in backyards, including plants that do not belong in 1982 and even a pile of dinosaur droppings. The family does not pay much attention at first. They are too caught up in their everyday problems.
Then everything changes. A massive flash of light swallows up about two miles of their town. When the light fades, the neighborhood sits in the middle of a prehistoric jungle. Dinosaurs roam everywhere. The Platt family and their neighbors must fight to stay alive.
How Time Travel Actually Works in the Movie
The movie uses wormholes as its time travel method. Audrey Platt, the science-loving daughter, explains the concept. She talks about the work of astronomer Carl Sagan and compares wormholes to shortcuts through an apple. Instead of traveling the long way between two points, wormholes create a direct path. In this movie, those paths connect different time periods.
Early signs of trouble come from a news report about NASA tracking “mysterious ripples” in space. Small wormholes start appearing first. They bring small items from the past into the present. Then a massive wormhole opens up and pulls the entire neighborhood back in time.
The movie does not give a detailed scientific explanation for why these wormholes appear. David Robert Mitchell chose to focus on how the characters deal with the situation rather than explaining every detail. The family never finds a convenient scientist or a control panel to explain everything.
The Portal System and How Characters Escape
The Platt family discovers that glowing spherical portals appear around the neighborhood. These portals can send people back to their own time. But there is a catch. Each portal only stays open for a short time. They also keep getting smaller each time they appear.
The family has to track down these portals and figure out when and where they will show up next. This becomes their main goal after they realize they cannot survive forever in the dinosaur-filled past.
Greg Platt dies during the family’s struggle to survive. A dinosaur attacks and kills him. The remaining family members push forward. Denise, Audrey, Brian, and a neighbor girl named Jeannette must find a way back without him.
What Really Happens in the Movie’s Final Moments
The surviving group finds one last portal. They jump through it and end up back in 1982. But they arrive about twenty minutes before the original wormhole event that sent their neighborhood back in time.
This timing gives them a chance to change things. Denise makes a collect call to order a pizza from her husband Greg. She knows he will be delivering pizzas that night. This small action changes his path. Greg stays behind instead of going to the neighborhood when the wormhole hits.
The family reunites in the present. They have saved Greg from his original death. But this creates a strange situation. There are now two versions of the Platts. One version made it back through the portal. Another version of them still got sent back in time without Greg.
News broadcasts later show that Denise managed to warn some people about what was coming. But not everyone could be saved. The movie ends with the Platt family together again, but the time paradox leaves viewers thinking about what really happened to the other version of the family.

The movie had a strong opening at the box office. It earned over $2.5 million from Thursday previews in the United States.
