House of the Dragon Season 3 has arrived, bringing a new kingmaker to the chessboard of Westeros. James Norton steps into the role of Lord Ormund Hightower, the head of House Hightower and the cousin of Alicent. He commands the largest remaining army in the Seven Kingdoms and holds sway over a dragon. Showrunner Ryan Condal has labeled him the Tywin Lannister of this era, a comparison that signals his dangerous capacity to shift the war’s balance.

Lord Ormund Hightower Enters the War

Ormund Hightower is the head of House Hightower, the nephew of Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), and the first cousin of Alicent (Olivia Cooke). He rules from Oldtown, the largest and richest city in Westeros, which commands one of the realm’s busiest trade ports. His family’s influence stretches beyond wealth: they are closely allied with the Faith of the Seven and the Citadel.

Viewers get their first proper look at Ormund in the season’s premiere episode. He receives a letter from Alicent, who forges a message from Aemond to halt his advance. The scene demonstrates his pragmatic and ruthless mindset. When a soldier suggests King Aegon might be dead, Ormund coldly replies: “One king is as good as another.” This line reveals a man whose loyalty lies not with individuals but with the advancement of his own house.

Comparison to Game of Thronesโ€™ Tywin Lannister

Showrunner Ryan Condal offered the clearest warning about Ormund’s potential. He stated that the character is “basically the Tywin Lannister of this world.” Condal elaborated on the threat: “He’s the richest guy who’s not sitting on a throne somewhere. Ormund has the largest standing army left in Westeros and a dragon, so he is going to introduce a big old wrinkle into this.”

The Tywin Lannister comparison is the most telling detail for fans. Tywin did not rely on dragons but on the power of wealth, strategy, and ruthlessness. Ormund possesses all three, and he actually has access to a dragon. This combination makes him an existential threat to Rhaenyra’s cause. James Norton himself has described the character as being “convinced that he will win against Rhaenyra.”

A Host of 15,000 Men and a Dragon

Ormund Hightower does not come to King’s Landing empty-handed. He leads a host of 15,000 men marching from Oldtown. This force represents the largest standing army currently in Westeros, a crucial advantage as both sides have suffered heavy losses.

The dragon adds another layer of terror. The beast, named Tessarion, is technically ridden by Daeron Targaryen, the youngest son of Alicent and Viserys, who is Ormund’s ward. While Ormund is not the rider, he effectively controls Daeron and, by extension, the dragon. This allows him to wield the power of a dragon in battle without the risk of being a rider himself, a strategic distinction that makes him even more dangerous.

The season premiere sets up the threat clearly. Aemond notes that the Hightower host is marching to ambush the blockade led by Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint). While Alicent’s letter temporarily diverts the force, it is clear that Ormund will soon join the fray.

The Series Expands Its Scope

The arrival of Ormund Hightower reflects Season 3’s wider ambition. The season opens with the Battle of the Gullet, a massive sea battle that was reportedly cut from Season 2 due to budget constraints. The production set a record by igniting 23 stunt performers in a single take during filming. Director Loni Peristere described creating a 186-page document to coordinate the complex logistics of the sequence.

The season will consist of eight episodes, premiering on June 21 and airing weekly until August 9, 2026. The premiere episode runs for 72 minutes. The conflict is shifting from political scheming to open warfare, and figures like Ormund are the ones who will define the conflict’s outcome. Condal noted that Season 3 will show divisions within the factions fracturing further, with people doing “awful things in the name of pride and power.”

Ormund Hightower is a character who exists to win. He has no sentimental attachment to the Targaryens. His power comes from his wealth, his army, and his control over a dragon. If there is a figure in Westeros who should make Rhaenyra and her allies afraid, it is the calculating lord marching from Oldtown.
