A U.S. Army unit in Georgia is giving its soldiers a unique reason to stay in uniform. The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, based at Fort Stewart, is offering a special four-day pass to play Grand Theft Auto VI when the game releases in November. The catch? Soldiers must sign a new reenlistment contract to get the time off.
The offer applies to active-duty enlisted soldiers in the battalion who are eligible to reenlist. They must sign a contract between August 1, 2026 and November 14, 2026 to receive the pass. The four days off are timed around the game’s official release date of November 19, 2026. Soldiers who take the deal must commit to serving at least two more years, and can sign on for up to six years.
How the GTA 6 Reenlistment Offer Works
The incentive came from a career counselor in the battalion who approached commanders with the idea. The goal was to create a program that connects with what soldiers actually care about. Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a Fort Stewart spokesperson, confirmed the memo is real and that the program is designed to get soldiers excited about reenlisting.
“The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what soldiers are interested in.”
The official memo, dated July 28, 2026, was signed by battalion commander Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson. It states that any soldier who signs a reenlistment contract within the specified window will receive a “special 4-day pass”. The pass is meant to align with the release of Grand Theft Auto VI so soldiers can have time to play the game without worrying about work duties.
Soldiers Are Already Taking the Deal
As of late July, at least 20 out of 130 eligible soldiers had already signed up for the incentive. The offer is only available to members of this specific battalion, not the entire Army. The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion is part of the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
The pass cannot be combined with other leave to create more than four days off. Soldiers will coordinate the exact dates with their chain of command to align with the game’s release.
Why the Army Is Using Video Games to Keep Soldiers
The Army has faced challenges with recruitment and retention in recent years. After missing recruitment goals in 2018 for the first time since 2005, the service started looking for new ways to connect with young people. The Army launched an esports team and began showing up at gaming conventions to find potential recruits.
This GTA 6 offer is part of a broader effort to use creative incentives. The 3rd Infantry Division was the number one division in the Army for retention last year, with career counselors completing their mission 90 days ahead of schedule. The battalion’s new career counselor came up with this idea to help meet reenlistment goals for the upcoming fiscal year.
Grand Theft Auto VI Excitement Is Building
Grand Theft Auto VI is one of the most awaited video game releases in years. The game takes players back to the fictional Vice City, a satirical version of Miami, and expands the map to include Florida-inspired locations with alligator-filled swamps. The first trailer dropped in 2023 and created massive buzz among gamers.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick called preorder demand “unprecedented and astonishing,” though the company has not released specific numbers. Rockstar Games, the developer, plans to show more gameplay footage soon. An extended trailer is scheduled to debut on Netflix next week. Hackers recently leaked apparent footage online, adding to the hype around the game.

A New Kind of Military Incentive
The Army already offers many reenlistment bonuses, including college tuition, choice duty stations, and special training programs. Soldiers can also receive cash bonuses worth tens of thousands of dollars. This GTA 6 pass is different because it ties a pop culture event directly to military service.
Lt. Col. Angel Tomko said the command team wanted to get soldiers excited about reenlisting. The battalion’s leadership believes eligible soldiers are now more aware of their reenlistment windows and are engaging with their career counselors earlier.
The offer is available to soldiers who reenlist for a minimum of two years. Those who sign up will get their four-day pass coordinated around the game’s November 19 release.
