Mahershala Ali spent more than a year training to play a vampire hunter in Marvel’s cancelled Blade reboot. That training never went to waste. The two-time Oscar winner now wields a sword as a contract killer in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, an action thriller that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2026, and debuted with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes from early reviews. The film opens in select US theaters on September 25, 2026, before expanding nationwide in October.
What Is Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother About
The film stars Mahershala Ali as Latif, a devout Muslim and highly skilled contract killer living in Texas. Latif has a strict moral code: he never uses guns and only accepts targets he believes the world would be better without. After his wife’s sudden death, he becomes a single father to three children — a teenage daughter named Fatiha (played by newcomer Adia), a young son named Qadir (Jahleel Kamara), and an infant daughter named Aziza.
Latif’s life spirals into chaos when his baby cannot digest formula, forcing him on a desperate search for breast milk across Houston. At the same time, his longtime employer Mike (Laith Nakli) pulls him into a dangerous feud with Hwan Yoon (John Cho), a former Marine turned Texas pastor who leads a militant Christian sect.
The film’s title comes from an Islamic hadith where the Prophet Muhammad, when asked who deserves the best companionship, answers “your mother” three times before mentioning anyone else. Director Bassam Tariq said the title reflects the film’s focus on family and motherhood. “It’s very American, it’s rooted in Black Muslim culture,” Tariq told Reuters.
From Cancelled Blade to a New Beginning
The road to Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother started with a project that never happened. Bassam Tariq was originally hired by Marvel Studios to direct a Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali. Tariq left the project in 2022 due to production delays, and by July 2026, Ali confirmed the film was officially dead.
That disappointment led directly to this film. Ali revealed that Marvel had unknowingly paid for his action training. “I was able to use those skills that I had been working on for over a year training for Blade,” Ali told GQ. He also expressed gratitude to Marvel for covering the costs of the training, noting that Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother could not have afforded such extensive preparation on its own budget.
Bassam Tariq described the collaboration as something that was meant to be. “It’s miraculous. There’s no other way to put it,” Tariq said at TIFF. “There’s no better person to play this than him, and it all just worked out”.
Mahershala Ali Enters His Action Era
For Mahershala Ali, the film marks a career shift. The actor, known for dramatic roles in Moonlight and Green Book, had never gotten the chance to perform full action sequences on screen. “This is definitely the beginning of my action era,” Ali told PEOPLE at TIFF. “I always die when the action starts. So this is the first time I actually got to do the action”.
Ali also spoke about the personal joy of making an action film. “Part of so gleefully saying yes to this project is, I think, in some very deep way, servicing the little kid in me that would go to a movie and come back and then suddenly you’re Batman,” he said.
John Cho plays the film’s main antagonist, a role he says is unlike anything he has done before. “This is not what people would expect from me,” Cho told The Hollywood Reporter. Cho wore cowboy hats, boots, and gold teeth grillz for the role. “It took me out of myself, made me feel more physical, made me feel more dangerous,” he said.
Critical Reception and Early Reviews
Early reviews for the film have been overwhelmingly positive. At the time of writing, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother holds a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 17 reviews.
Variety praised Ali’s performance, calling the film “a dazzling hardboiled action drama” that gives the actor “a leading role worth his while”. The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the film is “a crime film with a large beating heart, telling an achingly human story of a father mourning the death of his wife while killing to protect and provide for his three children”.
The Guardian described it as “its own beautiful singular thing, partly a stylish and pulpy neo-western thriller about a father racked with guilt”. IndieWire called it a “memorable story of a devout Muslim hitman”.
Adia, who plays Latif’s daughter Fatiha, also received strong notices in her big-screen debut. The Variety review noted her “constantly watchful performance, which makes of Fatiha a conscience figure both innocent and weary before her time”. Adia told Variety that working with Ali helped her reach emotional depths she had not accessed before.
