The Blade reboot with Mahershala Ali is officially dead. The two-time Oscar winner has confirmed that he is no longer attached to the Marvel project and has moved on after seven years of delays, director changes, and script rewrites. In a blunt interview with GQ magazine, Ali made it clear that if Marvel truly wanted to make the film, they would have done it.
Mahershala Ali was first announced as the new Blade at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, a moment that created massive buzz among Marvel fans. The actor even made a voice cameo as the character in a post-credits scene of Eternals in 2021. But the project never moved past the development stage. Now, Ali has confirmed that he is done waiting.
The Actor Calls Out Marvel Directly
Ali did not hold back in his conversation with GQ. When asked about the Blade reboot, he said the project is simply not meant for him.
“I have been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I have learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would have done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on.”
He then made his strongest statement yet, calling out the studio’s resources and his own contractual commitment.
“Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would have done the movie. So we are not doing the movie.”
Ali also made it clear that he is tired of answering questions about the project. He said he feels ready to move on from Blade questions and that those questions should be directed at Marvel.
Kevin Feige Admitted Failure on the Project
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had already confirmed the project was dead. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feige was brutally honest about his disappointment.
“I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we did not get off the ground with Mahershala.”
Feige explained that Marvel did not want to rush the film and put Ali in a leather suit just to kill vampires. He said the project had to be unique, and the studio never felt confident that the script was good enough.
“We did not want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique.”
He added that Marvel had entered a phase where they would only accept projects that felt “insanely great.” Blade, at that stage, did not meet that standard.
The Film Went Through Multiple Directors and Writers
The Blade reboot faced endless production troubles. Bassam Tariq was originally attached to direct but left the project in September 2022, just months before filming was expected to begin. Yann Demange later took over but also departed in 2024.
The script went through at least five different writers as Marvel struggled to find a version of Blade that worked. The film was pulled from Marvel’s release calendar, and by 2025, rumors started circulating that the project had been shelved.
Ali Found Creative Redemption in a New Film
The Blade cancellation did not leave Ali empty-handed. He reunited with Bassam Tariq for a completely different project called Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. The film is set to release in September 2026. It is an action thriller where Ali plays a deeply religious hitman in Houston whose wife suddenly dies.
Ali said the Blade collapse actually made this new film possible.
“When I look at this and Blade, I could not have done both, and the reason this even exists is because that project fell apart and Bassam had the time, space, energy, and focus to go and write this and then re-approach me.”
He also revealed that the physical training he did for Blade was not wasted. He trained for over a year, including sword practice, and was able to use those skills in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.
“I was able to use those skills that I had been working on for over a year training for Blade. In that way, I feel creatively redeemed on some level.”
Ali Prefers Original Work Over Remakes
Ali made it clear that he is not interested in being known for remakes. He said he would rather do original work that resonates with people in unique ways.
“I do not really want to be known for remakes. I would love to do original work that resonates with people and impacts them in unique ways. So, I am good.”
He called Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother a project that feels very much in alignment with the type of work he wants to be known for. The director, Bassam Tariq, praised Ali’s dedication, noting how impressive his sword skills were during Blade training.
The Original Blade Legacy Continues
The Blade character was originally brought to the big screen by Wesley Snipes in 1998. The film was a commercial success and led to two sequels in 2002 and 2004. Snipes later made a cameo appearance as Blade in Deadpool and Wolverine in 2024.
Marvel has since moved on to other projects. The studio recently announced Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider, adding to the anticipation for a potential Midnight Sons team-up in the MCU. But Ali will not be part of that as Blade.
