The latest episode of the CBS drama FBI took viewers on a wild ride through the dark side of cryptocurrency. Season 8 Episode 20, titled “Roleplay,” aired on May 4, 2026, and delivered a story that started with a rich womanโs death and ended with a kidnapping tied to the Russian Bratva.

What seemed like a standard murder case quickly turned into a complex web involving digital theft, family desperation, and a very personal trip down memory lane for Special Agent Jubal Valentine. The episode showed how a simple online money scam can spiral into real-world violence, leaving one family destroyed and forcing Jubal to face a ghost from his past.
How a Hotel Heiressโs Murder Uncovered a Deadly Crypto Phishing Scheme
The FBI team responded to the murder of Susan Granwell, a wealthy figure in New Yorkโs hotel industry. She was found dead in her apartment. Initially, investigators thought her death was connected to labor disputes at her hotels. There were protests happening, and the organizers seemed like logical suspects.
However, Maggie and OA discovered a secret. Susan was secretly engaged to one of the protest organizers. The two were in love, so his motive for murder did not hold up. The agents started digging deeper into Susanโs personal life, which led them to a young math tutor named Lucas Williams.
When the team went to question Lucas, they found his father dead and his younger sister, Faith, missing. It became clear this was not just a murder anymore; it was a kidnapping.
The investigation revealed that Lucas had gotten involved in a crypto phishing scam to make money. He managed to steal a large sum, using the cash to pay off family bills. But he made a critical mistake. He accidentally stole from the Russian Bratva, a powerful and brutal crime syndicate. To make things worse, someone posted Lucasโs personal information online, a practice known as “doxxing,” which led to Faith being taken by criminals looking to recover the stolen digital money.

Jubal Valentine Faces His Past to Save a Child
The case took a personal turn for Jubal. To find out who took Faith, he had to ask an old acquaintance for help: Andrei Ovechkin. Jubal lived in Moscow with his father for two years, and Andrei was his best friend. They were close, practically “partners in crime” during their school days. But after the Soviet Union fell, Andrei joined the Bratva to survive, and Jubal cut off all contact.
Jubal met with Andrei, who now runs the Bratva operation in New York. Andrei admitted the stolen crypto was “small change” to them and denied ordering Faithโs kidnapping. He also told Jubal that Lucas had been doxxed online, meaning anyone could have taken the girl.

The team set a digital trap. They sent fake bitcoin to the person who posted Lucasโs information in exchange for proof that Faith was still alive. When they received a photo, one of the agents recognized an old building style in the background, allowing them to narrow down the search area. Agents Scola and Eva found the kidnappers and identified the leader as Simon Brumel. While Simon was not directly in the Bratva, his father was, and he was trying to make a name for himself.
โAndrei told Jubal he did not know anything about the girlโs abduction until after they spoke, telling him he was not involved.โ
The team set up a meeting with Andrei to catch the kidnappers. Only one showed up, Nikolai, who stabbed Andrei when the deal went wrong. Nikolai was arrested, and he gave up the location of Ilia, the other kidnapper. The team rescued Faith safely.

A Bittersweet Rescue and a Broken Friendship
The case ended, but not happily for everyone. Faith was reunited with her brother Lucas. However, Lucas was arrested for the cryptocurrency theft and the death of his father, likely sending him to prison. Faith is left an orphan, facing an uncertain future in foster care.
The episode also left Jubalโs personal life in a fragile state. He visited Andrei in the hospital, where his old friend was recovering from the stabbing. It was clear that both men still shared a bond, but they are now on opposite sides of the law. Andrei is still a criminal, and Jubal is the agent responsible for stopping him. The reunion offered no easy answers for either of them.
