The JTBC crime-comedy series The Apartment Job wrapped up its 12-episode run on August 16, 2026. The show, which premiered on July 11, followed Park Hae Kang (Ji Sung), a former gang boss who entered an apartment residents’ election with a hidden plan. Over six weeks, viewers watched Hae Kang transform from a man with bad intentions into a protector of his community. The finale delivered a satisfying end to the main conflict while leaving some questions open for fans to discuss.

Chung Won’s Deadly Act Against Park Yong Man

The finale took a dark turn when Hae Kang learned the truth about his mentor’s death. Park Yong Man (Jung Jin Young), Hae Kang’s father figure, was murdered in the hospital. The killing happened after Yong Man confronted Lee Chung Won (Park Byung Eun) and called him out for being nothing more than a scared little boy. Chung Won could not handle the truth and turned off Yong Man’s medical equipment.

At Yong Man’s funeral, Chung Won told Hae Kang that he was at the hospital when Yong Man died. This confession made it clear that the death was no accident. Hae Kang realized that the man he had been fighting against had taken the life of someone he considered a father. The discovery turned the battle into something deeply personal.

How Hae Kang Found the Hidden Money

The missing reserve fund was a central part of the story. Hae Kang needed 10 billion won to save Yong Man, but the total reserve fund was 17.8 billion won (approximately $12.58 million). Chung Won had been moving this money through his network and hiding it.

Hae Kang and his team tracked the money by following trucks that Chung Won used for transport. But Chung Won outsmarted them by bringing the cash to the True Value apartment complex in secret and hiding it inside one of the 9,800 apartments. Finding it seemed impossible.

Hae Kang used a clever method to locate the money. He studied utility records and found an apartment with unusually low usage. This clue led him straight to the hidden cash. The team also discovered boxes of stolen money at President Seo’s old house.

The Lizard Betrayal That Wasn’t Real

Lizard (Kim Won Hae), a key member of Hae Kang’s team, appeared to betray him by running away with the money. The team checked CCTV and saw Lizard leaving with Mr. Kim. Ha Ri and Ms. Jang remembered the bribe that Chung Won had offered and assumed Lizard had taken it.

But the truth was different. Chung Won had threatened Lizard the night before and taken him hostage. Lizard was being tortured in a warehouse while Chung Won used his phone as bait to trap Hae Kang.

Hae Kang figured out it was a trap and went to rescue Lizard. He and his team fought through Chung Won’s men and saved their friend. Lizard later proved his loyalty by shielding Hae Kang from a knife attack, though he had prepared for this by stuffing a car manual under his clothes.

Ha Ri’s Role in Defeating Chung Won

Kang Ha Ri (Ha Yoon Kyung), who had been posing as Hae Kang’s fake wife, played a major part in bringing down Chung Won. After Chung Won tried to kill Ha Jeong, Ha Ri understood how dangerous he truly was.

Ha Ri convinced Hae Kang and his team to stop playing by Chung Won’s rules. She led them to target the places Chung Won loved the most: his private Pine Garden, Taegowon, and the One Club headquarters. The team investigated these locations with help from Police Inspector Mr. Son, whom Hae Kang blackmailed using evidence of his wrongdoings.

The police raided Taegowon and dug up human remains, which destroyed Chung Won’s operations. The media tore Chung Won apart, and the elders of Taegowon lost trust in him. This strategy proved more effective than pure violence.

The Final Confrontation Between Hae Kang and Chung Won

Chung Won did not give up easily. After losing everything, he took Gyeong Buk (Hae Kang’s fake son) and sent Hae Kang a photo, inviting him to the rooftop. On the rooftop, Chung Won offered Hae Kang the 17.8 billion won and claimed they were the same because both were after money.

Hae Kang told Chung Won that he pitied him. This reminded Chung Won of Yong Man’s final words, and he confessed to killing Yong Man. Hae Kang attacked Chung Won but did not kill him. He chose not to stoop to Chung Won’s level.

Hae Kang wanted to watch Chung Won fall slowly, the same way Chung Won had given Yong Man a slow death. He took the money and told Chung Won that he did not know how to live as a human being.

What Happened After Chung Won’s Arrest

Chung Won turned himself in to the police. Three years after his arrest and the collapse of his company, Hae Kang had completely left his gangster life behind. He reopened the Jeong Law Office and took on a new role as a corruption audit manager, helping apartment residents avoid financial fraud.

Ha Ri became a skilled lawyer at a major firm. Je Gil returned to complete his law studies, while Kang Ha Jeong opened her dream bakery and found happiness with Gyeong Nam. The residents of True Value got their money back when Hae Kang showed up with the cash.

The Romance Between Hae Kang and Ha Ri Left Open

The relationship between Hae Kang and Ha Ri did not get a clear ending. The show did not confirm whether they became a couple or remained close professional partners. Their fake family status was exposed, but their bond stayed strong. Fans are left to interpret their chemistry on their own terms.

Ji Sung shared his thoughts after the finale. He said:

“The Apartment Job has finally come to an end. Since it was a project with a slightly different tone from my previous work, there were many things I had to pay attention to, and I worked hard to show another side of myself.”

He also thanked the cast and crew:

“All of the staff and actors worked very hard to prepare, and we filmed without regrets. I hope Apartment will remain in viewers’ memories for a long time as a good and enjoyable drama.”

The Meaning Behind Hae Kang’s Choice

Hae Kang’s decision not to kill Chung Won showed how much he had changed. At the start of the series, he was a pragmatic former gangster who believed almost every problem could be solved with money. But his journey through the apartment complex and his connection with the residents changed him.

Unlike Chung Won, who only knew how to save himself, Hae Kang had many people to protect. This made him the most dangerous person at the table, according to Lizard. Hae Kang proved that he was not the same as Chung Won by choosing justice over revenge.

The series ended on a hopeful note, completing Hae Kang’s moral transformation. He redirected his skills toward helping others and became someone the residents could trust.
