Netflix has officially dropped the first motion logo and a behind-the-scenes photo for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, the upcoming fantasy film written and directed by Greta Gerwig. The streaming giant shared the reveal on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, giving fans their first real look at the project after years of waiting. Along with the logo, Netflix confirmed the film will hit IMAX theaters on February 10, 2027, expand to regular theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, and arrive on Netflix on April 2, 2027. The announcement set social media alight, with longtime fans calling it the return of a beloved classic.
What the New Logo and Behind the Scenes Photo Show
The official logo features a swirl of colors that reflects the magical, fantastical world of Narnia. It is the first official branding for the film, which has been in development since Netflix acquired the rights to all seven Chronicles of Narnia books in 2018.
Netflix also shared a photo from the set showing Greta Gerwig overseeing production with the cast and crew. The image was posted on social media along with the caption: “Experience the creation of Narnia, as filmmaker Greta Gerwig brings to life C. S. Lewis’s beloved story The Magician’s Nephew for the first time. In theaters worldwide February 12, 2027”.
The film has already wrapped production, with Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith, and Gerwig serving as producers. Mark Ronson, who worked with Gerwig on Barbie, is composing the score.
Greta Gerwig on Bringing Narnia to Life
Greta Gerwig has spoken openly about her personal connection to the source material. The director first read The Magician’s Nephew as a child and says the story left a deep mark on her imagination.
“I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life,” Gerwig told Netflix’s Tudum. “I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being.”
She also credited the book series with shaping her sense of wonder.
“Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me… It transformed me.”
The Magician’s Nephew is the sixth book published in the Narnia series but serves as a prequel, explaining how the world of Narnia was created. This marks the first time the story has been adapted for the screen.
The Cast of Narnia The Magician’s Nephew
Netflix has confirmed a full main cast for the film. Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell lead as Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, the two children at the heart of the story.
Emma Mackey plays Jadis, the villain who becomes the White Witch. Daniel Craig takes on the role of Uncle Andrew Ketterley, while Carey Mulligan plays Mabel Kirke, Digory’s mother. Meryl Streep is also part of the ensemble, and rumors suggest she may be voicing a version of Aslan, the lion who sings Narnia into existence.
Other confirmed cast members include Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Ciarán Hinds, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma.
Global Release Plan and Theatrical Strategy
The release plan for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is unusual for a Netflix film. The movie will have an exclusive theatrical window of nearly three months before it reaches the streaming platform.
Here is the full release schedule:
- IMAX previews: February 10, 2027
- Worldwide theatrical release: February 12, 2027
- Netflix streaming debut: April 2, 2027
Netflix will handle distribution in North America, while Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the film in all other regions. The extended theatrical run marks a shift in Netflix’s approach, as the company typically gives its films very short cinema windows. For comparison, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman had a limited theatrical release of less than a month, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery played in theaters for just one week.
Fans React to the King Is Back
Fan reaction to the logo and release date announcement has been largely positive. Many longtime fans of the Narnia books and earlier film adaptations took to social media to share their excitement. One fan posted on X with an image of Aslan roaring and wrote, “The King is back”.
Another fan expressed trust in the director, saying, “I know my childhood is in good hands,” referring to Greta Gerwig. The enthusiasm comes after a long gap for the franchise. The last Narnia movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, was released in 2010. The new film will be the first Narnia theatrical release in over seventeen years.

A First for Netflix and the Narnia Franchise
Netflix acquired the rights to all seven Chronicles of Narnia novels in 2018, the first time a single company held the rights to the entire series. The plan was to develop both films and television projects based on the books. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is the first major film to come from that deal.
The film is also notable for being Netflix’s first wide theatrical release, a significant step for a company that has traditionally prioritized streaming over cinema. The C. S. Lewis Company shared its support for the project: “It’s incredibly moving to see how deeply Greta Gerwig has embraced C. S. Lewis’s world, and infused Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew with joy, heart, and genuine love for the story. We’re so excited for audiences everywhere to experience it.”
