Black Clover Season 2 Episode 4 finally answered the question hanging over Nacht Faust since his introduction. The episode, titled “Day of Atonement,” aired on October 24, 2026, and split its time between a brutal fight against two supreme devils and a flashback that explained why the Black Bulls’ vice-captain treats his own life as disposable. Asta arrived in the final minutes to stop the devils from finishing Nacht off, but the episode’s real weight came from the past.

What Happened Previously

Season 2 returned on October 3, 2026, after a five-year gap, picking up the Spade Kingdom raid that began near the end of the original 170-episode run. The gate to the underworld was partially open, and Magic Knights were scattered across Spade territory. Nacht had been working from the shadows, and Asta had been training with his devil, Liebe, to master Devil Union. Episode 3 showed Asta using that power in combat for the first time. Episode 4 put Nacht alone against Naamah, a devil with flame magic, and Lilith, a devil with ice magic.

Nacht’s Past: The Twin Brother He Lost

The flashbacks revealed that Nacht and his twin brother, Morgen Faust, were born into the noble House Faust. They were opposites. Morgen had light magic, joined the Grey Deer squad alongside Yami Sukehiro, and wanted to protect people. Nacht had shadow magic, dyed his hair blonde, ran around causing trouble with Yami, and showed no interest in becoming a Magic Knight.

When Nacht turned 18, his parents told him about the family’s generations-long practice of contracting with devils. Shadow magic made him the right fit. He studied devilology, formed contracts with four lower-ranking devils, and then tried to summon Lucifugus, a high-ranking supreme devil, using a bracelet from his father.

The ritual failed. Lucifugus broke free and killed most of the Faust household. Morgen arrived and smashed the bracelet to stop the summoning, sending the devil back to the underworld. The effort cost Morgen his life. He died in Nacht’s arms, still believing his brother could change.

“Morgen was the steady one. He had light magic, joined the Grey Deer squad alongside Yami, and genuinely wanted to protect people.” — Episode recap, IndiaTimes

Why Nacht Hates Himself

The flashbacks reframed everything viewers knew about Nacht. The anger he aimed at others was always aimed at himself. After Morgen’s death, Nacht stopped seeking recognition and worked only from the shadows. He decided his own life was not worth protecting. Yami dragged him into the Black Bulls as vice-captain, but Nacht treated the role as punishment rather than a second chance.

Nacht’s Desperate Stand Against Two Supreme Devils

Naamah and Lilith were far stronger than Nacht expected. His plan was to dodge their attacks and buy time, but he quickly realised survival was not possible. He pushed past his limits and achieved Devil Union with his two devils, gambling everything on one move against the supreme devils. The animation during this sequence drew praise from viewers and critics.

Asta Crashes the Fight

The devils were about to finish Nacht off when Asta arrived. Nacht tried to send Asta toward the Dark Triad instead, still putting the mission ahead of his own survival. Asta refused to leave him behind. Asta’s anti-magic cleared the devils’ attacks, and he used Demon-Slayer to stop a giant fireball. The episode ended with Nacht alive but badly beaten, and Asta standing between him and two supreme devils.

Character Story Progression

Nacht Faust moved from a cold, judgmental vice-captain to a man defined by guilt. The episode showed that his harshness came from self-hatred, not arrogance. His willingness to die against Naamah and Lilith was not bravery. It was a death wish built on years of blaming himself for Morgen’s death.

Asta continued to grow into his role as the Black Bulls’ wildcard. His refusal to abandon Nacht showed the loyalty that defines him. His anti-magic, which once looked like a cheap trick, has become the Clover Kingdom’s most reliable weapon against devils.

Morgen Faust appeared only in flashbacks, but his presence shaped the entire episode. His kindness and his belief in Nacht became the standard Nacht has spent years failing to meet.

Yami Sukehiro appeared in the past as Nacht’s troublemaking friend and later as the person who pulled Nacht into the Black Bulls. His role in Nacht’s life was smaller in screen time but central to the episode’s meaning.
