Political commentator Link Lauren has shared a strong reaction to Heidi Klum’s viral Halloween costume, calling it “grotesque and bizarre” and questioning why the supermodel chose to wear a life-size severed hand that included replicas of her wedding ring and engagement ring while her husband, Tom Kaulitz, was away on tour. The criticism has added a new layer to the conversation around Klum’s already divisive look, which she debuted at her 25th annual Halloween party in New York City on October 31, 2026.
Lauren, a TikTok creator and former political aide, posted his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter) on November 1, 2026, and his message quickly circulated among fans who were already split over the costume’s gory details. His remarks came as Klum’s outfitโa giant, bloodied replica of her own left handโcontinued to draw praise and criticism online for its realism and its personal touches.
What Link Lauren Said About Heidi Klum’s Costume
Lauren did not hold back when describing his feelings about Klum’s choice of costume. In his post, he wrote that while many people loved the look, he found it hard to appreciate.
“Hot take: a lot of people loved Heidi Klumโs Halloween costume. But I found it grotesque and bizarre. Almost obscene. Also odd she went as a severed hand with her wedding ring in life sizeโฆ while her husband is ‘away on tour’.”
He later added in the comments that the costume “just seems like a cry for help to me”. The comment about Klum’s husband was a reference to Tom Kaulitz, the Tokio Hotel musician who was not at the party because his band was on tour.
Lauren, who was born in 1999 and built a following through political commentary on TikTok and X, is known for sharing unfiltered opinions on cultural and entertainment topics. His take on Klum’s costume resonated with some fans who felt the look was too disturbing, while others defended Klum’s creative freedom.
The Details Behind Klum’s Severed Hand Look
Klum’s costume was not a last-minute idea. The 53-year-old model and television host worked with special effects makeup designer Mike Marino and his ProRenFX team for months to bring the concept to life. The idea came to Klum while she was looking at her own hand.
“I was looking at my hand and I was like, ‘Hmm … I wonder if I could fit in a hand,’” Klum told PEOPLE at the event. “I was looking at my fingers, and I was like, ‘Fingers could actually be legs.’ Then my arms could be more fingers, and I could put my body in there somehow, so that’s what I proposed to Mike Marino”.
The final costume was an 8-foot-tall replica of Klum’s left hand, complete with exposed tendons, ligaments, long red nails, and a bloody wrist. Klum’s face appeared in the center of the palm, with only her eyes and mouth visible. The prosthetic hand also featured replicas of her actual jewelry, including her green stone engagement ring, her wedding band, and a thumb ring she has worn for nearly 15 years. A tattoo of the name “Tom” on the ring finger honored her husband.
Marino, who has worked with Klum on multiple Halloween costumes, described the project as one of the most elaborate they had ever made. The costume took roughly four months to build after about a year of brainstorming. Klum needed around five to six hours to get ready on the night of the party.
Why Tom Kaulitz Was Missing From the Party
The absence of Tom Kaulitz became a talking point after Lauren’s post. Kaulitz was not at Klum’s Halloween party because Tokio Hotel was on tour. The band had shows in Europe, including a date in Germany around the time of the party.
Klum addressed his absence on the red carpet, explaining that he could not be there because of the tour schedule. She also said she planned to join him on the road afterward. The couple, who started dating in 2018 and married in 2019, have often coordinated costumes in the past, but this year Klum went solo with a look that was deeply personal.
Mixed Reactions to Klum’s Halloween Costume
The public response to Klum’s costume was divided well before Lauren shared his opinion. Some fans praised the level of detail and Klum’s commitment to her annual Halloween tradition.
“Heidi Klum is a living masterpiece. Every HalloweenโฆIโm reminded just how much of one,” one user wrote on X under a Variety post.
Others joked about the costume’s over-the-top nature.
“Gotta hand it to her,” one commenter said.
But not everyone was impressed. Some fans found the gore too much to handle.
“I zoomed in on the prosthetics and immediately regretted having eyes. The detail is outrageous, Heidi wins Halloween again,” one person wrote, mixing criticism with praise.
Another critic simply said, “It’s terrible,” while someone else called it “super disturbing”. The split in reactions shows how Klum’s costumes often land somewhere between shock and admiration, and this year was no different.
Heidi Klum’s Long History of Elaborate Halloween Costumes
Klum has been hosting her annual Halloween party since 2000, and her costumes have become a major part of the event’s appeal. Over the years, she has dressed as a giant worm, Medusa, a werewolf from Michael Jackson’s Thriller, a peacock, and Fiona from Shrek, among many other looks.
The parties were not held in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Klum returned with ambitious looks in the years that followed. She has said that she keeps all of her costumes in storage, explaining that the face pieces do not stay intact but she receives replicas so she can keep the complete outfits.

Klum’s approach to Halloween is simple: she wants to surprise people.
“Some of the most interesting ideas come from the most ordinary things. I love the idea of taking something so common, and that we see every single day, something we probably never even think twice about, and turning it into something larger than life. I thought it would be funny and bizarre to take something so familiar and twist it,” she told Vogue.
That philosophy has made her one of the most talked-about celebrities every Halloween, even when the conversation includes criticism from people like Link Lauren.
