A six-month-old social media post from Adam Robinson has become the center of online conversation after the 45-year-old tech entrepreneur died in a private jet crash in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The post, shared on X in April 2026, used a plane crash as an analogy for building a business without venture capital. Now, those words carry a weight nobody could have predicted.
Robinson was the founder and CEO of Retention.com and RB2B, two software companies he built without outside investment. He was traveling with his wife, Helen Sharp, 40, their two young children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2, their nanny, Anita Maria Cetina, and two family friends, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr. All nine people on board the Learjet 60 died when the aircraft went down near Greenacres, just outside West Palm Beach. The crash has left the tech community and social media users grappling with a coincidence that feels almost impossible to process.
The April Post That Started the Conversation
On April 18, 2026, Adam Robinson posted a short message on X under his handle @RetentionAdam. The post read:
โYou donโt need to crash a plane to learn to fly … and you donโt need VC to build a business.โ
The message was classic Robinson. He built his companies without venture capital and often shared his belief that founders could grow successful businesses with small teams and limited resources. He regularly posted about business strategy on LinkedIn and YouTube, where he advocated for bootstrapped entrepreneurship.
At the time, the post was just another piece of advice from a founder known for his contrarian views on startup funding. Six months later, after news of the crash spread, that same post became a focal point for grief, shock, and disbelief.
What Happened to the Learjet 60
The aircraft departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas on Sunday, November 1, bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. While cruising at around 35,000 feet, the crew reported light clear icing and moderate turbulence. Minutes later, the jet entered a rapid descent. The aircraft crashed near Military Trail in Greenacres shortly before 1 p.m. , creating a crater and triggering a large fire.
The Learjet 60 was registered as N722BD. The pilot in command was Jeff Gregory, 55. The co-pilot was Nathalia Filgueiras, 20, who earned her pilotโs license while still in high school. Air traffic control recordings captured the final moments, with Gregory heard reciting the Lordโs Prayer and Filgueiras pleading for help.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating whether ice, turbulence, or human error contributed to the crash. Investigators have not yet determined whether the plane had a cockpit voice recorder or whether the device survived. The debris field stretched roughly half a mile, and NTSB representatives said finding debris will be a major challenge because much of it is expected to be small.
Who Was Adam Robinson
Adam Robinson was a Houston native who graduated from Rice University in 2003 with a degree in economics and Spanish literature. He played varsity basketball during his time at Rice. Before entering the tech world, he worked at Lehman Brothers and Barclays Capital as a credit default swap trader.
His first business was Robly Email Marketing, an email automation company he later sold to a private equity firm. He went on to found Retention.com, which helps e-commerce websites identify anonymous visitors, and RB2B, a B2B contact identification platform. At the time of his death, he was also CEO of MoltSets, a startup he founded in June 2026.
Robinson was known for building multi-million-dollar software companies without venture capital. He frequently shared his approach on podcasts and social media, encouraging founders to grow with small teams and limited resources. In a recent interview on the ProfitLed podcast, he described his life in Aspen, Colorado, saying:
โI feel like Iโm living the dream. I love the fact that I get to see my kids in the morning and the evening, and I donโt have to travel for work that much.โ
The Victims on Board
Seven passengers and two pilots died in the crash. The families of the passengers released a joint statement on Monday, November 2, identifying the victims and sharing a tribute.
Adam Robinson and Helen Sharp were described as โdevoted parentsโ whose children were โthe light of their lives.โ The statement said:
โHelen and Adam were the love affair that will last forever. Their warmth, generosity and gift for making people feel welcome touched so many lives. Their loss will be felt deeply by all those who loved them and who they loved in return.โ
Emma Robinson, 4, and Charlie Robinson, 2, were traveling with their parents on what was meant to be a family trip to the Bahamas. Anita Maria Cetina was the childrenโs nanny. The family statement said she โcared for Emma and Charlie with tenderness and devotionโ and โwas truly part of the family.โ
Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr were a couple and close friends of the Robinson family. The statement described them as โfull of joy and adventureโ and said they โloved their people fiercely, fully and without hesitation.โ
Jeff Gregory, 55, was the pilot in command. He had worked briefly for East Coast Jets in 2016 and 2017. The charter company said in a statement that it was โdeeply saddenedโ to learn of his death.
Nathalia Filgueiras, 20, was the co-pilot. She earned her pilotโs license at 17, before she had a driverโs license. Her mother, Camila Corteleti, confirmed her death to US media.
Social Media Reaction to the Resurfaced Post
The April post has drawn thousands of reactions since news of the crash broke. Many users expressed disbelief at the coincidence. One X user wrote beneath the post:
โHow eerie. Prayers for their loved ones. Oof. Absolutely heartbreaking.โ
Another commenter said:
โThis is deeply eerie and incredibly heartbreaking.โ
A third added:
โWhat are the chances?โ
On Instagram and LinkedIn, fellow entrepreneurs and colleagues shared memories of Robinson. Jesse Ouellette, a fellow tech entrepreneur, posted on LinkedIn:
โHe became a friend and someone I saw eye to eye with on how to build software companies. He could disagree with you about almost anything, and somehow youโd walk away liking him even more.โ
Retention.com and RB2B also issued a statement:
โWe are heartbroken by the loss of Adam Robinson, our CEO and co-founder, his wife Helen and their two young children, who died in a tragic plane crash in Palm Beach County, Florida, on November 1, 2026. Adam was much more than our CEO. He was a friend, a mentor and a leader.โ
A Family Statement and a Community in Mourning
The joint family statement released on Monday asked for privacy as the families grieve. It also expressed gratitude to first responders and the Palm Beach County community. The statement ended with a message for the pilotsโ families:
โOur hearts are also with the families of the pilots, who are grieving alongside us. We ask for privacy as we grieve. Details about memorial services will be shared once arrangements are made.โ
Helen Sharpโs father, Dudley Sharp, told the Palm Beach Post:
โItโs quite a blow. We had a daughter, her husband and two grandchildren on the plane.โ
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash footage as jarring, saying the plane came down โlike a missile.โ
