Farah Khan has revealed that her decision to bring a teenage Shreya Ghoshal on board for Main Hoon Na was not welcomed by everyone in the Hindi film industry. During a conversation at the singer’s Mumbai home for her YouTube food vlog, the director said she received phone calls from people asking why she was handing such a big film’s songs to a newcomer. The exchange, reported on November 6 and 7, 2026, puts a spotlight on a choice that later became one of the most successful calls of Shreya’s career.

What Farah Khan Said on the Vlog

Farah Khan visited Shreya Ghoshal’s Mumbai residence for the latest episode of her vlog, where the two spoke about their first project together, the 2004 release Main Hoon Na. The film was Farah’s directorial debut, and Shreya was still a teenager when she recorded her parts.

Recalling the period, Farah said she wanted a fresh voice for the soundtrack. She asked Shreya on camera how old she was when she came in to sing for the film, and Shreya remembered recording the songs in 2003. Farah described her as “extremely new and young talent” and said the plan was always to find a new face for the music.

The director also credited composer Anu Malik for pushing her towards the young singer. According to Farah, Anu Malik told her plainly to take the girl because she was “too good.”

“He was like, ‘Take this girl, she is too good.’” โ€” Farah Khan, recalling Anu Malik’s advice

The conversation was not only about music. Shreya spoke about her first impressions of a film set, including the food spread laid out for the team. She said it was the first time she had seen that side of film production and joked that it was “not bad.”

The Phone Calls That Questioned the Choice

The most discussed part of the chat was Farah’s account of the resistance she faced. People from the industry called her directly to question the decision. Some told her she was making a mistake by giving important songs to someone with little experience.

“So many people called me and asked why I was taking this new girl, that I was making a big mistake! But I said that I wanted a fresh voice.” โ€” Farah Khan

Farah also recalled that some of these callers warned her the choice could cost the film. She did not name anyone who called. Her account matches the wider picture of how the industry viewed Shreya at that point: a talented singer, but an unproven name for a big Shah Rukh Khan project.

Why the Industry Had Doubts

Shreya’s first film work was for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. Reports around the new interview noted that when she was recording for Main Hoon Na, the Devdas songs had not yet reached a wide audience. That left many people in the industry unsure about how she would handle a large commercial soundtrack.

Shreya offered her own reading of the doubt. She suggested that people may have judged her from her Devdas work, which was heavily rooted in classical music. A classical-heavy debut did not automatically convince observers that she could carry the kind of songs a Shah Rukh Khan film needed.

“For you to choose me at that time was a matter of guts.” โ€” Shreya Ghoshal to Farah Khan

Farah, for her part, gave credit to Bhansali for spotting Shreya on the singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and giving her a break. Shreya first appeared on that show at the age of nine and returned to it multiple times as a child contestant.

The Song Farah Khan Was Not Sure About

The director was open about one number that made her hesitate. The track Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha was written as a sensuous song, and Shreya was only 17 or 18 at the time. Farah admitted she wondered whether the teenager could deliver it.

“I was like, how would she sing it, as it was more of a Sunidhi kind of song? But you sang so well.” โ€” Farah Khan

That admission adds weight to the story. Farah was not simply defending a decision she had always felt certain about. She had her own questions about whether Shreya’s voice would fit a song with that tone, and the recording answered them.

How the Title Track Opened a Second Door

Farah explained that Shreya’s first contribution was a small portion of the Main Hoon Na title track, sung for visuals featuring Amrita Rao. That short piece was enough to convince the team to give her a bigger song, the track picturised on Sushmita Sen.

“You sang Main Hoon Na (title track) also very well, that little portion for Amrita Raoโ€ฆ and after hearing that, we gave you the Sushmita track in the film.” โ€” Farah Khan

The sequence matters because it shows how the opportunity grew. Shreya was not handed the full soundtrack at once. A small part led to a lead vocal, and the lead vocal became part of one of the film’s best-remembered songs.

Shreya Ghoshal’s Memory of the Recording

Shreya did not present herself as confident during the recording. She remembered watching Sushmita Sen on screen and being struck by how the actor looked in the footage. That led to a familiar worry for a young playback singer: whether her voice had done justice to the visuals.

“When I saw Sushmita on screenโ€ฆ how beautiful she looked, and I was wondering whether I had done justice to the songs.” โ€” Shreya Ghoshal

The moment is a small but useful detail. It shows that even as the industry questioned her, Shreya was questioning herself. The confidence in her voice on the final tracks did not come from a lack of nerves.

The Main Hoon Na Songs She Sang

Shreya’s main work on Main Hoon Na came on two tracks. The first was the title song, Main Hoon Na, sung with Sonu Nigam. The second was Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha, sung with Abhijeet Bhattacharya. Both were composed by Anu Malik, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

Shreya was also one of the voices on the upbeat track Gori Gori, alongside Sunidhi Chauhan, K.K. and Anu Malik. Some reports count her Main Hoon Na output as two main songs, while others list three because of that group number.

The title track became the most widely remembered of the set. Its opening line, “Kiska hai yeh tumko intezaar, main hoon na,” remains tied to the film more than two decades after release. Music reviews from the time praised the title song and noted Shreya’s accompaniment to Sonu Nigam as a strong part of the track.

Main Hoon Na and Its Place in Hindi Cinema

Main Hoon Na released in 2004 and marked Farah Khan’s move from choreography to direction. The cast included Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Suniel Shetty, Amrita Rao and Zayed Khan. The story follows Major Ram, who goes undercover as a college student while carrying out a military mission, and it mixes action, romance and family drama.

The film became a commercial success, and its soundtrack is still counted among its memorable parts. Anu Malik’s music and Javed Akhtar’s lyrics gave the album a mix of romantic, upbeat and emotional tracks. Shreya’s voice sat inside that mix at a point when she had almost no film profile.

From Sa Re Ga Ma Pa to Devdas

Shreya’s path to Main Hoon Na began on television. She was a child contestant on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali noticed her there. That led to Devdas, her playback debut, for which she won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer.

The award came early in her career and made her one of the youngest winners in the category. It also set up an unusual situation: she had national recognition attached to her name while many industry figures still had not heard her Devdas songs when she walked into the Main Hoon Na recordings.

Farah Khan’s Vlog Setting

The conversation took place on Farah Khan’s YouTube vlog, which mixes food, home visits and informal chats with film personalities. The episode was shot at Shreya’s Mumbai home, with Farah’s cook Dilip also part of the visit. Reports described the episode as ending with the usual gift exchange between host and guest.

That relaxed format is why the story came out in such direct language. Farah was not giving a formal press interview. She was talking to Shreya in her own living room, and the exchange moved from jokes about the food spread to the phone calls that once questioned the singer’s place in the film.

Where Shreya Ghoshal Stands Now

Shreya is now a five-time National Award-winning playback singer with songs across multiple Indian languages. Her recent work includes the All Hearts Tour โ€“ Live Album, drawn from a 44-city global tour and released under Sony Music India. The album collects performances from venues including the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and Mumbai, with tracks such as O Saathi Re, Deewani Mastani, Chikni Chameli and Samjhawan.

The distance between the phone calls Farah received in 2003 and Shreya’s current concert schedule is the factual core of the story. A director was told she was making a mistake by choosing an 18-year-old. That 18-year-old went on to become one of the most recorded voices in Indian film music.
