The wait is almost over for fans who have been hoping to see Krysten Ritter reprise her role as the wisecracking, bourbon-loving private investigator Jessica Jones. The character is officially making her return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, and the people behind the show are opening up about why now was the right time to bring her back.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is scheduled to start streaming on March 24, 2026, on Disney+ . The new season will consist of eight episodes, and it picks up six months after the events of the first season . With Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) tightening his grip on New York City and hunting vigilantes, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) is going to need all the help he can get. That help comes in the form of Jessica Jones, and the showrunner has very personal reasons for wanting her in the story.
Why the Showrunner Fought to Bring Jessica Jones Back
In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane explained that bringing Jessica Jones into the fold was a priority for him from the very beginning. He made it clear that he was a huge fan of the original Netflix series and felt that the character’s journey was far from over .
Scardapane had high praise for the original show, specifically shouting out the work of showrunner Melissa Rosenberg.
“What Melissa Rosenberg did with Season 1 of Jessica Jones is some of the finest superhero television work ever,” Scardapane said.
He didn’t stop there. He revealed that he actively pushed for the character’s return as soon as he started talking to Marvel about the new series.
“When I first came talked to Marvel I was like, ‘Weโve got to bring Jessica Jones back!’ I donโt feel that her story ended. If you read the comic books, youโll know that thereโs a next chapter of her life that I thought was super interesting” .
This statement from Scardapane confirms that the version of Jessica Jones audiences will see in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is not just a cameo or a guest spot to throw a few punches. The showrunner sees this as a genuine continuation of the character’s arc, picking up years after the events of Jessica Jones Season 3, which aired in 2019.
A Lot Has Changed for Jessica Jones
Because so much time has passed in the real world, the show is also acknowledging that a lot of time has passed in the MCU. The new season is set roughly seven years after the end of the Netflix series, and the characters are not the same people they were back then .
Scardapane addressed this directly, pointing out that they are leaning into the idea that these characters have “matured” and “gone through life.” He posed a very interesting question about the fan-favorite private eye.
“One of the things weโve leaned into is that time has passed between the end of the Netflix show and the beginning of ours. Weโre acknowledging that. These characters have matured; theyโve gone through life. And Jessica Jones, bourbon-swilling smartass โ whatโs it like for her to mature seven years?” .
This time jump opens up a lot of possibilities for the character. When viewers last saw her, Jessica was running her detective agency, Alias Investigations, and trying to maintain her relationships with friends like Malcolm and her adoptive sister, Trish Walker. Now, seven years later, her life could look completely different.
What Has Jessica Jones Been Doing for Seven Years?
The showrunner’s comments have sparked a lot of speculation among fans about what the “next chapter” of Jessica Jones’ life looks like. Marvel’s Head of TV and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, previously teased that the series will catch audiences up on her life and that there are some “very cool surprises” in store regarding what she has been up to .
The biggest theory circulating among fans is that Jessica Jones might now be a mother.
The Comic Book Connection
In the Marvel Comics source material, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage (another hero from the Netflix shows) eventually get married and have a daughter named Danielle Cage . Danielle is named after their friend, Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist.
Given that the Netflix series already established a romantic relationship between Jessica and Luke (played by Mike Colter) in the first season of Jessica Jones, fans believe it is very likely that the two reconnected off-screen. With Colter recently hinting that he has been “talking to Marvel” about returning as Power Man, the timing seems perfect .
If this theory proves true, it would explain why Scardapane found the character’s future so “super interesting.” Seeing Jessica Jones navigate the challenges of being a private investigator, a superhero, and a mother would be a fresh and exciting direction for the MCU.
Krysten Ritter Teases Her Gritty Return
The actress herself, Krysten Ritter, is thrilled to be stepping back into Jessica’s boots. In an interview with Screen Rant, she teased what fans can expect from the new season without giving away any spoilers.
Ritter expressed how meaningful it was to reunite with Charlie Cox and the rest of the team, saying it felt like no time had passed at all.
“Oh, it’s gritty,” Ritter said about the new season. “It feels big too. The crew’s amazing. I’ve had an amazing experience. I can’t say anything, but I love being with Charlie [Cox]. It was as if no time had passed. Like, my first day, I was looking around like we’re back” .
Her description of the season as “gritty” should reassure long-time fans who loved the grounded, street-level feel of the original Netflix shows. While Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 had a slightly different tone, bringing in Jessica Jones signals a return to that darker, more personal style of storytelling.
Jessica Jones and Daredevil: A Reluctant Team-Up
The trailer for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, which was released in late January 2026, gave fans their first real look at the dynamic between Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones .
The footage shows Matt looking injured and possibly on the run. Jessica finds him and, in true Jessica Jones fashion, greets him with a sarcastic quip rather than a warm hug.
“I hope you can walk, because I’m not carrying you,” she says to Matt in the trailer .
This line perfectly captures the character’s dry humor and no-nonsense attitude. Despite her rough exterior, the trailer makes it clear that she is there to help him fight against Kingpin’s forces. Their pairing brings together two of Marvel’s most beloved street-level heroes, and the chemistry between Cox and Ritter is already generating buzz.
The trailer also hints at a larger resistance movement forming against Mayor Fisk. A missing person’s poster for Matt Murdock suggests he has gone deep underground, and he is using his Daredevil persona to wage war on the Kingpin’s regime from the shadows .

What This Means for the Future of The Defenders
The return of Jessica Jones has naturally led to questions about the other Defenders. Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Finn Jones (Iron Fist) have both expressed interest in returning to their roles, and Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum has hinted that “collisions are inevitable” when it comes to these characters .
While neither Colter nor Jones have been officially confirmed for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, the groundwork is clearly being laid. If Jessica Jones is back and her story is evolving, it makes sense that Luke Cage wouldn’t be far behind, especially if the “next chapter” involves their relationship.
A third season of Daredevil: Born Again has already been confirmed and is expected to arrive in March 2027, giving Marvel plenty of room to continue expanding this corner of the MCU .
For now, fans can look forward to seeing Krysten Ritter suit up once again on March 24, when Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 premieres on Disney+ in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India, as well as globally on the platform.
