The team behind the Emmy-winning comedy Hacks is saying goodbye to Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels with the fifth and final season. But they are not completely closing the door on revisiting these beloved characters in the future.

The series premiered its last season on April 9, 2026, on HBO Max. The 10-episode final run will wrap up on May 28, 2026. While this marks the end of the show as fans know it, the creators are already thinking about what could come next.

Creators Confirm They Would Consider a Return

Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky, the creative force behind Hacks, attended the season 5 premiere event in Los Angeles. When asked about the possibility of a reboot or revival down the line, the trio gave an answer that pleased many supporters.

“We would never say never. We love these characters, we love this world, we love everybody in the ensemble. Right now we feel good about going out without overstaying our welcome — but you won’t have to twist my arm.”

The showrunners confirmed they have a new project in early development at HBO. However, they kept all specific details about that future show private for now.

Cast Members Are Ready to Return

The actors who brought the show to life also shared their excitement about a possible comeback. Hannah Einbinder, who plays Ava, did not hide her feelings about reuniting with the cast.

“Of course I would. Any excuse to be with my people,” Einbinder told Variety at the premiere.

Megan Stalter, known for her role as Kayla, added humor to her response about returning for a reboot.

“Yes, for free — or $5 million that I can share with the cast,” Stalter joked.

Jean Smart, who plays the legendary comedian Deborah Vance, spoke warmly about the unique relationship at the center of the show. She explained why the bond between Deborah and Ava stands out in television history.

“I can’t think of a relationship like Ava’s and Deborah’s that has been in a movie or on television,” Smart said. “I think the writers just seem to outdo themselves and raise the bar every single solitary season. This may be my favorite season.”

What to Expect From the Final Season

The fifth season picks up after a wild turn of events. False news reports mistakenly declared Deborah Vance dead. Shaken by the experience, Deborah and Ava return to Las Vegas with one clear goal. They want to secure Deborah’s place in comedy history.

The season features 10 episodes released weekly. Fans in the USA can watch on HBO Max. Viewers in the UK can stream on Sky Comedy and NOW. Audiences in Canada find it on Crave. Australian fans use Binge or Foxtel. Indian viewers watch on Disney+ Hotstar. The finale airs on May 28, 2026.

Jean Smart Shares Emotional Goodbyes

The cast filmed their final scenes with mixed emotions. Smart revealed that the production team slowly took down the sets piece by piece. This process made the ending feel very real for her.

“The first time it happened, they said, ‘Okay, that’s a wrap, that’s a series wrap on Deborah’s bedroom.’ I was like, we’re never gonna sleep in this bedroom again?” Smart recalled.

She admitted she never asked the creators how the series would end. Smart wanted to be surprised along with the audience. When she finally learned the ending, she had doubts at first. But after trusting the writers, she changed her mind.

“Now I think it’s kind of perfect, and it’s really great,” Smart said.

Einbinder, who was 24 years old when the show began, reflected on how much the series changed her life.

“I feel like I grew up and became a human being on this show,” Einbinder shared.

The Show’s Legacy and Critical Success

Hacks first aired on May 13, 2021. Over five seasons, it became one of HBO Max’s most praised comedy series. Jean Smart won multiple Emmy Awards for her performance as Deborah Vance. The writing staff also received top honors for their work.

The creators always had a clear vision for the show’s length. They told Vogue that the final scene of the series was planned from the very beginning.

“Part of our original pitch for the show was the very last scene,” Aniello said. “We knew how the season would end and how the show would end if we were so lucky as to get to imagine it how we wanted.”

The final season brings back familiar faces including Paul W. Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Mark Indelicato, and Rose Abdoo. Guest stars this season include Tony Goldwyn, Kaitlin Olson, and Christopher McDonald.
