The upcoming crime thriller Kockroach has officially finished production. Chris Hemsworth shared the news on May 31, 2026, announcing that filming wrapped in Australia. The movie, which also stars Taron Egerton, Zazie Beetz, Rachel Sennott, Alec Baldwin, and Brian Geraghty, is now in post-production.
Hemsworth posted several black-and-white photos from the set on his social media. He called working on this film the most fun he has ever had on a movie set.
“That’s a wrap on our film Kockroach. Quite possibly the most fun I’ve had on a set. Amazing cast and crew and one hell of a wild script! Can’t wait for you to see it !!” – Chris Hemsworth
First Look Images Show a Darker, Vintage Crime World
The first official images from Kockroach appeared online on June 2, 2026. These pictures show Chris Hemsworth and Taron Egerton wearing long dark coats, suits, and fedora hats. They are seen walking in front of a classic vintage car.
The background looks like an old industrial area of New York City. The movie is set in the 1950s. The black-and-white style of the photos gives a mysterious and rough feel. This fits the story about the criminal underworld.
Producer Andrew Lazar described the film as a fresh take on the gangster genre. He compared it to famous movies like Scarface and Goodfellas.
What Is ‘Kockroach’ About? The Reverse Kafka Story
The plot of Kockroach is very unusual. It is based on the 2007 novel by William Lashner, who wrote it under the name Tyler Knox. The story takes a famous idea and flips it.
Franz Kafka wrote a famous story called The Metamorphosis where a man wakes up as an insect. Kockroach does the opposite. A cockroach wakes up in a New York hotel room as a human being.
The newly formed human learns to survive. He studies how people act. He climbs up the ladder of the criminal world. He starts as a nobody but turns into a powerful crime boss. The movie will show how a creature that was once ignored becomes the one in control.
Matt Ross, who directed Captain Fantastic, is the director. Jonathan Ames wrote the screenplay. Ames is known for the show Bored to Death and the movie You Were Never Really Here.
Filming Details and Production in Australia
Shooting for Kockroach began in April 2026. The production took place in Sydney, Australia. The city doubled for 1950s New York. On April 14, 2026, Hemsworth posted a picture on Instagram with the simple caption: “Kockroach. Day 1”.
The film received support from the Australian government. Screen NSW’s Made in NSW Fund helped bring the production to the state. The movie created more than 600 local jobs. It brought an estimated $37 million in spending to the New South Wales economy.
Several Australian crew members worked on the film. This includes production designer Alex Holmes, costume designer Anna Cahill, and stunt coordinator Mark Rayne. Odd Studio, known for creature designs, worked on the prosthetics and effects.
Cast Changes and Star-Studded Lineup
The cast of Kockroach has changed over time. Initially, Channing Tatum and Oscar Isaac were attached to the lead roles. They had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts. Chris Hemsworth and Taron Egerton took their places.
The full cast list includes:
- Chris Hemsworth
- Taron Egerton
- Zazie Beetz (known for Atlanta and Deadpool 2)
- Rachel Sennott
- Alec Baldwin
- Brian Geraghty
This is one of Alec Baldwin’s first major movie roles in several years. The film also has strong technical talent behind the camera. Adam Arkapaw, who worked on the first season of True Detective, is the cinematographer. Colin Gibson, known for Mad Max: Fury Road, is the production designer.
