The trailer gives fans the clearest look yet at the movie before it hits theaters on June 26, 2026. The story takes a dark turn when Kara’s dog Krypto gets a deadly poison from alien attackers. Kara then has only three days to find a cure.

Krypto’s Injury Pushes Kara Into a Violent Revenge Mission

The trailer makes one thing very clear. Do not hurt Kara’s dog. After Krypto tries to protect Kara, space criminals hit him with a slow-acting poison. The weapon leaves Krypto with little time to live.

Kara tells her dog, “home is where you are buddy”. This moment shows how close the two are. Kara lives away from others and keeps to herself. Krypto is her only real family.

One fan on YouTube wrote: “I love that James Gunn has made his dog the most important character in the DC cinematic universe.” Another person called the movie “john wick in space”.

The film follows the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. In the original story, Kara travels across the galaxy with a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley). They want to catch Krem of the Yellow Hills (played by Matthias Schoenaerts), the man who killed Ruthye’s father.

This line has gotten a lot of attention online. Many see it as a clear statement from James Gunn and DC Studios. The new DC Universe will be brighter and more hopeful. This is different from the darker movies of the past decade.

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) reacted strongly to Corenswet’s return. One person wrote: “i am absolutely dying to see more of his new look in supergirl”. Another translated reaction said the line about colors “reinforces this even more fantastic idea of a universe that seeks to connect with childlike imagination”.

The trailer shows Lobo as a wild and violent bounty hunter. He joins Kara and Ruthye on their trip across space. Momoa fully becomes the character with white skin, dark hair and a rough attitude.

Fans Compare the Movie to Guardians of the Galaxy

The trailer has started a debate online. Some viewers think Supergirl looks a lot like James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel. The colorful space settings, the music choices and the team of misfits have drawn comparisons.

One viral post called the film “Guardians of the Galaxy 3.5”. Another person on X wrote: “It just looks like a Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off. Doesn’t look or feel like Supergirl at all”.

But other fans defend the movie. They point out that the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic came out before the Guardians movies. The comic has its own unique tone. One person simply said: “I am absolutely dying to see more”.

Milly Alcock Talks About Her Personal Connection to Kara

Milly Alcock, known for House of the Dragon, spoke to Variety about the role. She shared why she connected with the character so quickly.

“What Kara was going through that I was going through is she’s someone who has been at war with themselves,” Alcock said.

“Pain is a universal feeling. I was able to connect with that pretty instantly”.

The movie shows Kara as someone who stays away from others. She does not want to be a hero like her cousin Superman. But the attack on Krypto forces her to leave her isolated life and fight back.

The Movie Connects to a Bigger Krypton Story

David Krumholtz plays Zor-El, Kara’s father. In a November 2025 interview, he talked about how the film explains more about Krypton.

“I’ll just say that I’m thrilled to be the next piece of telling the story of Krypton and further clarifying what the House of El is all about,” Krumholtz said.

This connects to the first Superman movie. That film ended with a twist about Jor-El and Lara’s real reasons for sending Kal-El to Earth. Supergirl will give more answers about what happened to Krypton and the El family.

Craig Gillespie (Cruella) directs the movie. Ana Nogueira wrote the script. James Gunn and Peter Safran produce.
